Default My car has over heated three times this winter

Seems like when I have blasted the heater for extended periods of time I would get a "caution" signal that my engine was over heating. I have also noticed there have been times my radiator sounded like it was still running even though the car was parked and completely turned off. The latter happened with greater frequency in the summer.

Am I pretty doomed to having to get a new radiator or corresponding pump to keep my kitty kool??

The earlier XK8/XKR models have regular issues with sticking Thermostats which causes these same symptoms. I would eliminate that before moving on to suspect radiator or pump.

Thanks so much, would the sticky thermostat cause the radiator to continue running after the car was turned off?

Have you checked the status of your anti-freeze?

It is definitely most likely to be the thermostat, and this can cause the fans to run on as you describe. As Syd referenced, if your 2007 has never had a coolant flush, this would be the perfect time.

Do not put off repairing this....these aluminum engines are not very tolerant of overheating and it has the potential to cause major damage very quickly.

My XKR has never had an overheat warning, but on occasion I have kept track of ECU reported coolant temps with an OBDII scanner. I'm always surprised as it often reports temps of up to 205 degrees, even if it's cold outside. I just replaced the thermostat with a genuine OEM one, and it has made no difference.

What sorts of temps are normal??

in past posting conversation this seems to be somewhat common on early model XK's. the culprit in my case was the plastic thermostat housing... It failed and required replacement (about $200 for the part) and included a new thermostat. bol Vince

Yes - but so would anything else impeding proper coolant flow.

Thermostat:

Starts to open 88° C (190° F)
Fully open 95° C (203° F)

Modern engines and emission efficiency need to run at or around 200*F. The ECU looks at engine temp to determine various fuel and performance operation.

+1 on the thermostat. These are classic symptoms. Don't wait to have it fixed. Inexpensive and easy to replace. Now I wish getting my Pantera to run cool was as easy!
