New to the forum
Hi guys,
Great forum, been browsing for a couple hours.
I just bought a 2011 XKR convertible with a salvage title for $27K. I'm expecting delivery within a week or two and I'll give a complete report of any repairs needed. The car runs/drives, interior is clean, body looks very clean.
No panic here, I've bought numerous salvage titled vehicles over the years. I'm budgeting 10K in repairs, but with some luck I won't approach that. It's a flood salvage and I've tackled these before, though never at this price range.
I'll be posting pics once the car gets here. I plan to keep the car for no less than ten years so I'll probably be picking everyone's brains here for a long time.
My last Jag was a 2005 XKR that spent more time in the shop than it did on the road. The day the warranty expired I put it up for sale. The comments I've read here about depreciation are dead on. After four years I sold it for less than half of what I paid for it.
I'm in the SF Bay Area. Would love to know if there are any owners clubs out here.
Thanks in advance for all the upcoming advice.

Here's the belated update on the XKR. It starts and runs but is not charging the battery. Many of the electronics are not working (top, gps, sound system, etc). My guess is the body processor module is shot along with a few other things. Someone snipped a bunch of wires for reasons I can not fathom. The body has some nasty scratches which I attribute to towing and sitting in Copart's yard for some time. I'm looking forward to getting this beast back in shape and on the road.
I'll put up some pics as soon as I figure out how.

Your probably looking at more than $10,000 in repairs, parts, labor. Be prepared for price shock.
There are plenty of very knowledgable members here to answer questions that you might have.

I've bought from Copart previously so to a certain extent I knew what to expect. Since I'm not a licensed dealer I had to use a broker and I went with autobidmaster as I had used them in the past. They also took care of shipping, which saved me a step and their pricing is competitive.
The downside to Copart is you have no control over what happens to the car after you've purchased it. This car was certified run/drive but when the transporter went to pick it up, it wouldn't start. The yard man grabbed a forklift, picked up the car and set it on the trailer! This was all done without my knowledge; had I known the car wouldn't start I would have paid the transporter to buy a battery and install it. As far as I can tell, the forklift didn't do any damage but I haven't had the car on a lift yet.
My advice for anyone considering this type of purchase is to buy from a Copart yard that is local to you, or hire an inspector to look at the car and give you a written report. My car was not exactly as advertised, however I think I'm still under market pricewise and I'm happy to keep this car from being parted out or suffering an even worse fate.
Thanks in advance to everyone whose advice I will be seeking over the next several months.

I haven't determined yet. The interior and engine compartment had both been cleaned. There is some residue in the trunk under the carpet but it's mostly sand colored. I always assume the worst case scenario--salt water--and go from there. The car was titled in New Jersey. Superstorm Sandy was probably the culprit in which case it's sure to be salt water.
There's a weird history to this car that I haven't had time to research. Seems that it was bought by a dealer directly from Hartford Insurance, then placed with Copart to auction off. That would perhaps explain the cut wires, missing spare tire and a few odds and ends.
Edit to add:
I found a seller on eBay who has cd's with shop literature on them. I just received mine and it's about 5K pages in length. If anyone is interested I'll look up his seller ID. He's in England. Also in England is a dealer who parts out late model Jags and I've been talking to him about parts I may need.

If it's a Sandy car, be prepared for major expense and repair. The rate of corrosion in salt water is enormous.
We are all wishing you the best. Keep us posted, this will be a project of extreme interest to many.
If it's salt water damage, most likely you won't be able to even part it out.

Thanks, Muddydog. I actually read that thread the day I joined the forum. Fascinating stuff. I'm glad there are other guys around who want to save these cars from an ugly demise. Reminds me of that Ferrari that was rebuilt on "Fast and Loud".
Love that fast n loud episode. Bad azz looking F40 in black. I guess it now has a salvage title? Still worth a ton.
