Default New key fob

Where is the best place to buy a new key fob for my 2014 XKR. The car came with only one and how difficult is it to program?

Thanks

Smartkey:

1. best place to buy: Jaguar Dealer
2. how difficult is it to program: easy - if you have Jaguar SDD

Just did this my self. As Graham says, go to the dealer. I had no luck with local automotive locksmiths and just wasted time.

I bought one a few months ago from an automotive locksmith who also programmed it for $250.00 total. Works like a charm.

Dealer is safest, but dang expensive. Plus, if you bring in your own cheaper (NEW) key they sometimes will not program it.

See my post #3 here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...orking-231926/

If you buy a used Smartkey on Ebay, make sure that you get a written guarantee that it has been cleared and is ready to be reprogrammed to work with your car, with a full refund if returned within 30-days after you received it.

Stuart S,
You're absolutely right. I ordered one from Ebay first, and when it came I took it to the same automotive locksmith who couldn't program it. Fortunately, he had several blanks and fifteen minutes later I had a working key. When I ordered from Ebay, I made sure it was from a U.S. sourced vendor not from China so that I had some recourse. I sent the key back and was refunded. And by the way, the XF of the same years uses the same fob, so when calling around you can ask for either one.

Some advice for future buyers of used Smartkeys.

It's best to send a message to the Seller before you buy it, so you have his email reply to rely on to get a refund if it doesn't work. Be sure to cover all the bases - send this: "Seller represents that the Smartkey has been cleared and is ready to be reprogrammed to work with your car. If it doesn't work, you can return it for a full refund including your return shipping cost if shipped to Seller insured with a tracking number within 30-days after you received it." Use only a credit card to pay for it - not a debit card or bank draft - so you can dispute that charge with the card issuer and get your money back. Keep the return shipping receipt and send the Seller a copy to include with your refund.

Agree with Stuart.

I did the same after checking with my Indy with SSD that they could reprogram a used fob if it had been orphaned from it's original car.

Got it from ebay and didn't even need to take it out of the packaging for Indy to confirm they'd not be able to program it as couldn't pick up any type of signal, returned it straight away and was refunded the £50

I'd be totally happy with one fob with a metal key and one without.
