Possible 2013 XKR purchase, terrible service history
Drove to SF to check out a low mileage 2013 XKR vert. Has 32k. A pilot’s license should be required. They are fun! Triple black. Looks, sounds and drives great. Top is good, everything works. First sold at large non Jag dealership in NC. Mostly non Jag dealer service. The problem is service history.
Owner 1 (2012-2016) Drove 8,200. Basically no service. No listed oil changes or service. Several wash and details. CarFax does have 2 “Vehicle Serviced” showing but no details.
Owner 2 better (2016-2021). Drove 14,800. First known oil change (5yrs, 12k). Regular oil changes, 45k service and routine service.
Owner 3 basic (2021-2023). Drove 9,000. Oil changes and inspections.
Seller inherited. Knows nothing about the car. It sits in the sun, battery went dead, air bag light on. Aftermarket wheels (also has stock set). Car Fax says 36. That’s a dealer price. Based on that, he wants 33 (no way). A nice 2014 XKR (60k miles) sold on BAT for 34. Great service history. On the 2013, possible issues include TSB’s, deferred maintenance, potential problems. I don’t want to do (and pay for) a PPI until the price is more realistic for a private sale. Is the car even worth considering? What’s it worth?

You should certainly use the lack of a full service history to negotiate down the purchase price but I wouldn't worry about it. 8200 miles is nothing and the time-related service intervals are largely just manufacturers/dealers maximising their profits. I bought my XK with a discount for virtually no service history and then contacted the original Jaguar supplier who sent me a computer printout showing all the proper servicing.

I'm of the type who does his own services. Those aren't recorded as I don't care to do so. No receipts, no annotations. I DO know that I do it timely and well.
Other people do that also. I know that, so a well-documented service history really doesn't impress me much either when making a purchase.
There are signs.
A well-documented history does not indicate a car that's been beaten between those services.
A funny story which happened to a friend of mine a couple decades or so ago...
Dude found an ad for an older Mustang, I forget what year but 1972 comes to mind... The ad states "OVER FORTY THOUSAND INVESTED" and the price seemed good.
He got there and the car was a complete heap. The owner seemed quite proud though and happily brought out the "Records".....
Several sets of tires, wiper blades, washes, Sparko floor mats, washer fluid, oil, filters, wax, tire cleaners, sun shades... all the receipts for EVERYTHING he'd bought for it for the past fifteen years or whatever. I'm surprised he didn't include all the gasoline he'd bought.
The bushings were worn, the engine was tired, the transmission slipped a bit, paint was fading, glass had the typical chips and scratches everywhere... It would NEED $40k invested to be worth $40k.
BUT, he had those RECORDS!!!

You can never rely on CarFax to buy a car, but you can rely on it to NOT buy a car, particularly if has an odometer discrepancy, or "branded" or rebuilt title that means the insurance company deemed it to be a total loss. And there are some things that CarFax will never find.
Consider the absolutely perfect, super low mileage, one-owner 2007 XKR Coupe that's for sale by an elderly woman. It was her 65th birthday gift from her late husband, and she decided to sell it now due to poor health. It looks like it belongs in a museum, and has less than 4,000 miles. She, too, was quite the looker back in the day.
When asked about the low mileage, she explained that it was their weekend car and it was never driven in the rain, but that was a rare occurrence in California. She drove it almost every Sunday, a quarter-mile at a time.
She's the Little Old Lady From Pasadena!
And her XKR wasn't what it appeared to be. Only you can do your due diligence.

Seller had it inspected. Good Bay Area Brit Indy (Bacchus) recommends water pump replace, replace rear torque arms and sway bar. Also air filters, cabin filters and flush brakes. Based on the dead battery seller mentioned, probably a new battery. Also air bag warning light is on. Report doesn't mention how worn the brakes are or tire condition. I'l make the hour drive and do a detailed inspect if we get closer to a realistic price. He was at 33 before the report. He's only had one other inquiry.
Its only worth what 2 people agree on. Without seeing the car, the seller is asking a fair price. Im like CeeJay and do my own maintenance to a 'T' including oil changes every 12 months or 3k. Heck, I just had both bumpers resprayed out of pocket due to some rock chips and a scratch on the rear bumper that was there when I got it. Todays fun was all new pads and rotors because they were below 50%. I guess my 'over parenting' will look like neglect on a Carfax. Point being, its only got 33k on the clock and a simple code search with a PPI will tell you everything you need to know. The battery and water pump should be done anyway at this age. You can fix almost everything on a car except the mileage.
Closest comps nation wide are a 2013 28,000 with miles for $39k and 2012 with 34,500miles for $30k. Both are in the middle of the rust belt. Their average price is $34,500ish. So the car you are looking at might be a good at asking. Good luck! I have the supercharged V8 in my L405 and its a beast. Im also more than happy with the NA5.0 for its simplicity.

Thanks for comps. The market is low. I'd pay 30-31 if regularly driven, good service history, talk actual owner, no work needed. Seller got 1 other inquiry in 30 days.
CF is a starting point. You find out more when you meet the owner. I print out a list of the things I've done for any car I've ever sold.
On this one, I can't talk to the owner (not his kid who inherited the car and knows nothing about it). Would help.
Under first owner (4 years) no service and was driven only 8,200 miles. Currently hasn't been driven for more than than a year. Needs work.
We've got the water pump (is there anything wrong w/ it? ), rear suspension bits, airbag light, brake flush and air filters. If we can find a price, I'd do a real PPI. Drive down. Have Bacchus put the car up on a rack so I can look. Go over everything w a fine tooth comb. Oil? Color? Coolant level? Color? Leaks? Tire condition and wear patterns. Do a long test drive. Why the 3 cans of Sea Foam in the trunk? Problems w/ the injectors? Does idle smoothly.
The key to these cars is a proud owner, needs no work and good service history (CF and owner supplied). Enough miles that everything's gotten fixed.
Bought my 06 XK8 w/ partial service history, weird seller, needed work, no PPI because owner didn't want to drive anywhere. Took months to get it right
Bought my 07 XKR w the best service history I've ever seen. Wealthy owner, open checkbook maintenance. Perfect PPI. No work needed. Zero problems in the year I've owned.

No deal. Seller (who inherited) wants 33k for a car that needs a water pump, rear suspension parts. Inspection just said brakes good, no mention how much wear. Non Jag dealer initial sale. No service, no oil changes for 4 years. Hey fun to test drive. I’ll buy from an actual owner whose car has a decent service history.

Although... if I could sell MINE for $33,000 right now...... no, I wouldn't do that.
Glad it worked out. 4.2's are bulletproof.
If there's any shops/dealers listed in the carfax, call them and ask about their opinion of the condition of the car. When we were looking for our XJ, we did that for one we found only for the dealer to tell us it was an electrical nightmare and that they wouldn't buy it even if it was sold at scrap value, saving us $42k. Unless you're looking at it in person with scan tool in hand, if you're questioning whether it's a **** car or not, then it's definitely a **** car.
