Default Questionable Noise from 5.0 SC (Anyone know what it is?)

Hey everybody, I’m new to the forum but I’ve had my 2011 XKR for about a year and a half now and it’s been an amazing experience!

That being said, while I understand the XK platform to be reliable overall, anytime I hear a new noise it definitely sparks some paranoia haha.

The car has just a little over 90k miles on it and hasn’t given me any issues, but it just recently started this odd sort of whine coming near the front of the engine bay.

I have an indie Jag mechanic scheduled to look at the car near the end of December, but I wouldn’t want to exacerbate any issues this sound may mean by driving it in the meantime.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I originally attempted to attach the video from my phone but no luck.

Now that I’ve uploaded it to my YouTube channel here’s the actual sound:

Does the noise change with engine speed?
Sounds like a bad bearing, maybe on an idler pulley, but also maybe on the water pump or other accessory.
If the sound DOES change frequency with differing engine speeds, get a funnel or a stick and see if you can hear where the sound is coming from.
Chances it's from the front end, as I said. Pulleys or bearings.

Remove the accessory and supercharger drive belts then restart the engine to see if the noise is still present.

Thanks for the replies everybody! I’m unfortunately pretty busy for the next few weeks so won’t really have time to get down in the engine bay but I’ll let you all know if something comes of it.

for added info, the previous owner had the water pump & thermostat replaced a few thousand miles before I bought the car and gave it a small-pulley upgrade in the process.

I don’t know if that affects anything else in there, but I suppose it could?

to answer another question, the sound does *not* change with the RPM, it seemed like a steady constant instead.

If the pulley was put on by someone and that someone didn't do it the proper way, you may have a misaligned belt, which could mess up a whole bunch of stuff. A looser belt (cuz smaller pulley) could also be a culprit.

Doesn't to me sound like a belt or pulley alignment issue, doesn't also sound like a isolator/coupler issue.

Can you advise if the SC oil's ever been changed? If not I think it's overdue with those miles and your SC is running on dry and what you can hear is bearing noise.

My 2014 with 56k miles is going in to have the oil and nose replaced tomorrow (as well as all new ancillaries and a 6% ss bolt on pulley) I'll play your clip for my mech when there and let him guess.

Another possibility is the supercharger snout (coupler). It's a common repair. See:

If it isn't changing with rpm, that tends to discount the rotating bits. That would have me looking for a squealing vacuum leak.

Another thought would be the intercooler pump.
