Default Tire pressure system fault

Night before last I was commenting to a friend that the tire pressure warnings that I had constantly about a year ago seem to have gone away entirely since I had the tires at about 40psi. Of course, yesterday, while driving home in rush hour traffic, I got a "TIRE PRESSURE SYSTEM FAULT" warning on the dash, not the usual "Tire pressure low" one with the car display. When I got home about 30 minutes later, I tried the usual Jaguar fix, restart the car a couple of times to see if it cleared, but to no avail. I then decided to check the air pressure. Three of the tires were near the 40psi, but rear passenger tire was about 50psi! I deflated it to 40, restarted the car, but the warning came back. I drove to an appointment a few minutes later, and the warning disappeared during the drive. Go figure! I was reading some posts on the XF forum and this seems to be a common occurance over there. Has anyone had this fault on their XK/XKR and was it one that reappeared with any frequency?

You're in LA, so hopefully your TPMS fault is not caused by activity in the San Andreas fault.

Seriously, intermittent electrical issues always make me suspect a loose wire/bad ground in that circuit. Have you ever replaced any of the sending units in your wheels? If not, one or more may have a dying battery - your car is 6+ years old. Your tire shop should have a tool to test each wheel sensor.

If you replace all the wheel sensors (transmitters) and the reciever and still have that intermittent fault, then it's a bad connection.

See: Changing TPMS Sensor Batteries

Ted - One of the issues with the TPMS on the XK/XKR series is a delicate wire behind the font bumper cover that tends to get frayed or crimped. This info is from the shop foreman at Hornburg in Santa Monica.

I'm going to the Concours at Muckenthaler tomorrow. Will I see you there?

Hi Ralph,
The warning went away and hasn't returned, we'll see what happens. My son's graduation from Loyola Law School is tomorrow, so I can't make it, but hopefully I'll see you at Queen's English.

Just to add my experience........
I've experience intermittent TPMS faults, as well. Each time, I'm thinking low tire, but Nada..Now that I have my MAxJax up and running will schedule some time to visit the loose/corroded wire theory.
Happy Motoring.....

My Fault Warning comes and goes, mostly goes. I've checked the wire-pinch area and all was well. Tested all transmitter and replaced one. Rotated all the antennas and replaced one. Still and yet, it shows up every sixth to tenth drive and sometimes stays on for a couple.
Maybe it's designed that way, because now I check the pressure myself at least once a week just to be sure.

Ted - Sorry, but I can't make the Queen's English. I will be out of the city. Congratulations on your son's graduation. Is he leaving the payroll soon?
