Default Top Strip Speed

Well the Russians have invaded... The Moscow Unlim 500 crew hosted an event on the island a couple weeks ago. They brought about 20 supercars from Russia to do 1 mile drag races, about 8 GTRs, a couple Lambos, Porsche GT3s, an X6M, a Saleen 7 and a Juke-R. Best sounding was the AvenTAdor but the fastest was an Underground Racing Gallardo that hit 398 kph but then caught on fire on the next run trying to get to 400.

I entered the open event and with conservative launches (just rolling on the throttle) I managed a 13.5 1/4 and hit 279 kph with a 31 second mile.

WHAT A BLAST!

Unfortunately the wife was filming and she cut each run once we were out of her view, she'll know better next time. Had 5 runs on Saturday and 7 on Sunday. Can't wait to do it again!

Mike,

Your YouTube video only displays the message 'This video is private' on a black background.

Presumably needs a 'share' setting?

Your top speed of 279kph is equal to 173.36mph. That's right on with what Wikipedia says is the 4.2L XKR top speed - 174mph. Wikipedia says the 5.0L XKR-S will top out at 186mph.

What tires were you running, and what pressures? Where did you do this and how long was the track?

Sounds like it was a lot more fun than a one-horse open sleigh!

Limiter settings:

Standard XKR 4.2 & 5.0: 155 MPH (250km/h)
2008 XKR-S 4.2, XKR 75, XKR 175 & Speed Pack XKR 5.0: 174 MPH (280km/h)
XKR-S 5.0: 186 MPH (300km/h)

However, I got my XKR 75, which is supposed to be limited to 174, up to 184 on GPS (speedo off the clock) - and that was in both D and S modes, without manual shifting or any of the other tricks that are alleged to fool the limiter. So, it seems there may be some variation.

Default Oops

Video is public now...

I'm running Michelin PSS and I had the fronts at 31psi, rears at 27psi.

This was in Tympaki on the island of Crete at an old WWII airport. The landing strip we were using is a little over 1.5 miles long.

I expected the limiter to kick-in at 155mph(250kph) but I was clocked at 279kph. I was in sport and I believe as someone mentioned in another thread by staying out of 6th the limiter is not activated.

If you do have the chance to push your Jag to the limit in a safe environment, I highly recommend it!

Looks a lot of fun and good to see it done the right environment.

Great top speed. I would guess that given a some more distance the XKR could have squeezed out a few more MPH top. Sounds like a nice, safe speed event.

Not without shifting into 6th - the car will redline in 5th before you can get much faster. And if you go into 6th, the limiter will kick in.

With mine in S, it held 5th up to about 6250 RPM which was something like 175 (on GPS) before it shifted into 6th and dropped down to about 5500.

Default Official Clip

Here's a clip the Unlim 500 guys put together after the event.

There's some nice footage of the Aven-TA-dor covering the whole mile run... it sounds so sick!!!

Enjoy:

Default Better sound clip

and another that really captures the Aventador's sound from the stands.

I wish my wife kept the camera rolling like this rather than cutting it short... I'll use this to train her up

+1 - bought one for my autobahn/Nordschleife trip, really worthwhile. I went for the 1080P medium-wide setting to get reasonable recording time and avoid the 'fish-eye' effect of the wider settings. The video quality is good, though it looks a little washed out:

Ngarara, thats what I'm talking about, air that thing out and still carry on a conversation. The car looked rock solid at those speeds. At least the slower drivers stay to the right.

What video card do you use in the Go Pro? You should have a much better picture. I'll have to look and see what card I have.

Couple of those drag cars were all over the rev limiter. I was wonder why that Lambo seem like he was shifting normal and definetly out of the gas while shifting? It sure sounded nice.

Yes, it was completely stable - no front lift or light steering, no effect at all from passing other cars, though I tended to back off when passing trucks just to be safe. Mind you, it was a very still morning, so there was no appreciable wind effect.

And while the Germans are all very careful not to pull out in front of fast movers - in fact, they will even duck back in if they have started to pull out - the same can't be said of other nationalities, particularly the Dutch. I was looking at other clips I have of the same run, and most of the occasions that someone was blocking the fast lane, it was a Dutchman.

SanDisk Ultra 64GB. I could have a sharper picture, because the Hero 3 will shoot in 4K resolution, but it only does that with a widescreen aspect and I don't like the fisheye effect it creates. Also, it fills the card much faster. I'm not sure what the issue was; it almost seems to be an exposure/saturation issue. To be fair, it was a bit misty that morning - I had to wait to get out of the mist before making the run, but it was still around above us and that tends to 'flatten' the light.

Ngarara, Get a Scan Disc card that is a SDHC much better card for the Go Pro. This is the preferred card. You will run out of battery first with the 32G card.
