All that these things do is send signals back and forth over wires using protocols. The real magic is the software, which unless you’re paying heavy subscription fees, you are using a hacked copy anyway. As far as shade tree mechanics using non approved equipment, I can tell you that some of us can do things the dealership can only dream of.
