Since my gear selector plate is in a rather bad condition, with cracks and scuffs, I would love to either replace it (if I can find a new one), or to refinish it myself.

I just attempted to get the darn thing off, but no success. JTIS also doesn't have a procedure for it. Any ideas?

Others have read this as meaning it's the J gate surround you want to remove. Your arrow points to the J gate itself........?

One of Rev. Sam's Youtube videos show how he removed his. It's a little tricky if you haven't done it before:

 

Right - the top of the J gate has a plastic cover, with the numbers anf letters on it. This is what I want to remove!

I already had my surround out, mine is of solid aluminum, which was clear coated. I sanded the scratched coating off and gave it a brushed aluminum look.

 

The J Gate is fixed with three screws:

There seems to be no way to then split this plastic section down any further.

I think it would be very difficult to refinish and renumber the gear positions. A good used part has to be a better option?

Actually, the top plastic plate seem to be removable, by first undoing the large torx bolt, then lifting the plastic surround top up - but mine only comes loose on certain sides, others are fixed - probably some plastic hooks in place, but I cannot figure out how they work.

I would love to find a used part, but I have so far been unsuccessful with this.

I know this is an old thread - but did you ever manage to do it (separate the plastic with the letters on from the j gate module) i'm trying to do the exact same thing on an XKR. I think i have a part ordered.

 

Yes, I have done so. This from memory as it was awhile ago. Flip it over and remove the micro-switch (with roller) at the top (top being the end closest to the dash/radio/AC Controls) by gently squeezing the tab in the plastic rivet holding the mounting bracket and slipping the rivet out. You really only need to remove one side. Undo 2 tiny TORX T-6 screws on opposite sides that hold the top plate to the body and one tiny phillips screw. I have T-6 TORX screwdriver from working on an iPhone. Top plate should now lift off. I do not recall if there were any plastic latches or just the screws holding it together.
I did this to replace the lamps that illuminate the j-gate at night. There are 2 small lamps which are soldered to the little circuit board which is laid out in the picture above. I replaced them with some LEDs and it works great. I thought I had a picture on my phone but can't find it so perhaps on the camera at home. I have more LEDs if interested as I had to buy a package of 25 and only needed 2. Hardest part was getting the wire connector back in place around the shifter.
