Default “Black Box, Flight Recorder” in the AJ27 ECM

Learned something new tonight. My ECM is keeping tabs on me in the event I crash into a barrier at 155 mph and trip the inertia switch. Or do anything and trip the inertia switch. From the Service Training Course 881:“Black Box, Flight Recorder” / Inertia Switch Monitor

The ECM records 10 seconds of throttle operational data in a “rolling’ memory in the volatile battery backed RAM.

The data is continuously updated and stored during engine operation. In the event of the inertia switch being

tripped, an ignition switched ground is applied to ECM pin EM82-12. The ECM copies the last 10 seconds of recorded

throttle data into nonvolatile EEPROM and DTC 1582 is flagged. The DTC is cleared using PDU.

They can't recover that information if you crash it well enough.

I was wondering how non volatile EEPROMs are after hitting a barrier at 155mph.

Surprisingly reliable since it has no moving parts.

The parts will be moving at 155mph before suddenly becoming non-moving.

Not that suddenly. Big deceleration, sure. (All sorts of parts are going to crumple etc.)

Reading the NV memory quite likely a low priority in that situation, too!
