Unfortunately, my husband's Jaguar XK8 Convertible's engine overheated and stalled due to a broken radiator hose. According to the mechanic 3 cylinders of the engine have no compression. The cost to either fix this engine or replace it will be about $4,000. He has finally decided that he doesn't want to put that amount of money into the car and has decided to replace it. We live in Nassau County NY and I was wondering if anyone from this area may know of a company that may buy cars in this condition and refurbish them? The body is in excellent condition. We just don't know what the best option is to dispose of the vehicle. Any suggestions?
You can try advertising in the forum market place, craigslist, ebay. Kelley Blue Book on the car in GOOD condition is $5,600.00. With the outlook of 4 to 5 for an engine installation it will probably hard to sell at $1,500.00. In my area they are 2 on craigslist that need engines one is $1,400.00 and one is $1,700.00. They have been on craigslist for over 2 months. In looking at them and the work involved I offered $500.00 each about twice what a scrap yard will pay. Probably within another month I will have at least one if not both.
Overheated engines are seized, one of pistons is usually "welded" to cylinder wall. Your engine is probably nikasil engine, nothing to do with overheating.
Craigslist and ebay.
"In August 2000 Jaguar replaced the Nikasil-linings with steel linings."
what is your car manufacturing date? JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource
I think you need to do a little more historical research. Nikasil linings are destroyed by overheating. I believe motorcarman and other professionals and experienced long term members can confirm that.
Thanks for your quick reply. I'll have to check around. If we are only going to get $250 from a scrap yard, I would rather give it to someone who is mechanically inclined and can do the work themselves and have a great looking car for $4,000. This car owes us nothing! My husband has enjoyed it for 17 years. Till this day he still gets compliments on it. Drove it 130,000 miles with minimal repair costs aside from regular maintenance.
Have to bring my 2015 XJL to Jaguar for repair on Tuesday. I'll check with my service guy to see if he knows someone who may want the car. Again, thanks for your input.
What is manufacturing date? If your engine is NOT nikasil engine, it will help you get more money for it. I would be interested, but you are too far. Anyway I would like to know manufacturing date. And VIN number would be nice to know. I can call dealership and find out about engine.
I'm very interested in your car. It depends on the total cost it would be for me to get it to North Carolina. I have a spare engine from a 99 XK8 in my barn there that will drop right in. I think it might be dropped valve seats in the head. I have an 2000 XJR with dropped valve seats that overheated. When I move back there It will be one of my projects to rebuild the engine.
I'm also very interested in your car. if you can wait til the end of the month i can come with a trailer to get it from you. I have a couple engines that can be dropped in there.
please let me know.
thanks

My husband could not find the manufacturing date. It was not accessible on the left of the thermostat housing. He found this info Engine Family - YJCXV04.OBN4 - 2twc; 2UHEGQ; 2H02S;SFi. Don't know if this helps. In any case, the VIN# is SAJJA42C7YNA09846. Hope the VIN # will help.
PS: Brought my XJL in for service on Monday. Husband came with me to "browse" what dealer had available. He ended up buying an F-Pace. That was an expensive service visit LOL.
I don't know which is cheaper [Chevy LS swap or AJV8 replacement] but in the long run it might vary depending upon who performs the transplant, the quality of the labor & parts, and whether one estimates future maintenance expenses.
There are a couple different philosophies, but for those who don't have a strong opinion - or an extra Jag engine lying about - it doesn't hurt to be informed.
