2000 XKR - Anybody removed the last mufflers on each side?
Hi,
Just wondering what success anyone has had with removing the last mufflers on each side. There are the cats, center muffler, 2 more mufflers and then the last two. I am curious as to what the sound would be like and if there is a bit more power to be had by removing the last muffler on each side. It looks like a pretty easy job to cut those suckers off and put a straight pipe in and then put the tips on it.
Thanks,
dje

I'm going to do it eventually. If you have it done, have them cut off the pipes at the prior muffler and install new pipe from that muffler and up over the axle. If you get under the car and look up you'll see why. Jaguar put a nasty crimp in the pipe where it passes over the rear axle. The cross section is probably less than half of the cross section of the straight pipe. That little bit of restriction has to affect the performance, especially on an R.

The ones before the rear axle?
Check out YouTube for Jag V12s running without silencers - Glorious! They sound like Spitfires.

I took the last muffler out and replaced by a straight pipes from Adamesh. On a 1997 XK8. Sound is louder of corse and nice roar of engine when full accelerating . But , if you are cruising around 1800 rpm under just light engine load , there is a annoying buzzing in the car. Listening to the radio is limited. I only did trips below 100km, but would change back if I had to go these distances every day , just because of this buzzing. There should be something like on Harley Davidson or Porsche where you can switch the buuble- bubble or roar-roar on and off. That would be a solution I would go for.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. I have had 4 Porsches and several Harleys. The 1st thing you do is open up the exhaust. I will let you all know what I have done and the results. Right now, I am leaning towards new over-the-axel pipes to open up the nasty crimp they put in it and a straight pipe to oval tips. The only problem I have with this approach is that I do not know anyone that can weld stainless pipe in.

Removed the center muffler instead
Well, I changed my mind after talking to my exhaust guy. This guy is an artist and know exactly the sound I am after. He replaced the big muffler in the middle of the car with two straight pipes. The car now just sits and purrs at idle. A few more revs and she starts to growl a bit with no droning. In fact, there is no droning at any RPM. Nail it and she really speaks up, sounds like a refined 60s muscle car. I know I may be giving up a couple of HP by not having a crossover pipe, but I really like the sound of the true duals. I read other threads and really appreciate all of the wisdom and insight everyone shares here.
THANKS!

But, there are also those who own exactly one motorised vehicle. In that event, it pretty well has to do all things.
