My recently purchased X100 XKR had the navigation option. Probably great in 2001 Las Vegas (that is where the car is from) but not in the Netherlands in 2019. It had to go and be replaced by the 3 gauge version. So the search started. First bought a cluster (ebay UK 30€ incl shipping), the harness from jagwrangler(89$ incl shipping excl €20 import tax) and a trim piece (ebay US, 74€+20€import tax).
This is the setup that has to work for now. I searched and found some complete dashboard trim sets but I'm not willing to pay +750€ at the moment for a full replacement set. Eventually it will happen as my dash has the "milk" issue anyways but that is for a later stage.
As the sourched trim piece was completely different from my set I thought I'd tried covering it with (faux) leather matching the original oatmeal color. I’ve ordered (local car upholstery place) a piece of Buvetex Scarlett 004 leather (1m at 60€) and started working. I took my time and used normal pattex contact glue. It works, it is not that hard, you simply need to take your time, see how the material works and use common sense. I think it looks nice to be honest. The color matches very well and the overall appearance also looks nice. No, of course the original look is way better but as a second choice.. not bad at all. I can recommend it to everyone waiting to find the right set or right time to replace the whole dash set.
Oh and the conversion with the jagwrangler harness, very fun to do and not hard at all. Don’t be scared, follow the instructions and even if you take your time it is done in a couple of hours (if you are quick I bet you do it in half an hour). So that’s it. Here are some pictures of the end result.
Interesting approach. I bet the faux leather effect looks better in person than it does in the photographs. It would certainly take some getting used to, though....
great job! looks better than installing a wood veneer panel that does not match the surrounding wood veneer. always best if you can not match the surrounding wood, make it completely different!
