Default 4.0 AJ-V8 to 5.0 AJ-V8?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has swapped the 4.0 Supercharged engine out of a XKR and put in a 5.0 Supercharged engine. I want to make my cat scream!

Any information regarding upside/downside would greatly be appreciated.

Probably not viable due to all the computers (ignoring any other issues).

Cheaper and years faster to sell and buy a different car.

There are easier ways to get the power of a 5.0 (and more), really.

How deep are your pockets on this project? Anything is doable with the right budget, but you have to ditch the cars electronics, and go custom here. You could probably start with checking the 5.0 ECU if that one could be used to at least control the engine and possibly the gearbox as well. So investigate all the in/output pins, and see if that can be supported in one way or another.

Otherwise you need to get your own programmable ECU and other type of transmission, that will be some work. I guess that mechanically fitting the engine and some transmission could be doable, plate/frame work is off course relatively easy.

Another thought would be to make body panels so the 5.0 XKR looks more like ours.

Or get a XK8 and put a ls engine in it, at least you will keep there the Jaguar electronics.

Thank you guys, I want to keep my 02 XKR and just do a motor, maybe trans swap. I was also aware that there would be a ECM swap needed. I was just wondering if anyone had done it, could give me some insight. Like are the motor mounts the same, will the 4.0 trans match up to the 5.0 block, what changes are needed regarding ECM... things like that.

I know purists would say don't mess with it. But this will be one of a kind XKR and I will be doing several things to it. I want to make this a true performance vehicle and not a sport tourer.

Some of the things I have done so far are:
Smaller Supercharger Pulley from Mina Gallery
Cold air intake from Mina Gallery
High Flow Exhaust from XK's Unlimited
And True Spoked Wheels from Master Wheel Smith in the UK

I am replacing the wood trim & Steering Wheel with Carbon Fiber from JAG Interiors in the UK

I am also removing the back seats and having a roll bar put in that I saw on this forum and will be adding a race tuned suspension.

So as you can see, I will be putting money into this project and would just like to see if I can put a bigger engine into it or if I will have to just "Build" my existing 4.0 and get as much horsepower out of it as I can without blowing it up.

I guess what I am asking mostly is do the 4.0, 4.2 and 5.0 AJ-V8 share the same block?

If so, I can use my heads and transmission and ECM and would only need to have some headers and exhaust made.

The 4.2 is very much the same, main difference is the stroke which allows the 200cc extra, but the 5.0 is a totally new block, new technology and only some bolts are possibly same.

So why not twin-screw if its power you're looking for?

This is my question, I very much like this idea but am unsure where I would get this kit….. Where can I find this kit? Is it just replacing the screw inside the Eaton m112 or is it an entirely new supercharger? For reference, I have an 02 jaguar xjr.

I would say tuning and modifications to the 4.0 you have is the way to go on this, better intake. Uprated/ faster? Supercharger via pulley changes, then higher flow injectors, but definitely with a suitable tune from someone reputable that knows about this, remember head gaskets have never been a strong point on these motors.
Good luck
I love your enthusiasm 👍🇬🇧

The easiest way to do it would be to get an aftermarket ECU that can replace the Jaguar unit and just strip out all the older electronics for newer replacements that will work with said ECU. It wouldn't be easy by any stretch of the imagination and certainly not cheap.

I honestly want to see this done. If you decide to be the pioneer of an AJ 5.0 SC swap, please document everything. Should be fun and challenging!

I think I would look for an accident salvage 5.0 car that way you have all electrics, ecu's, motor, transmission and diff, sell the rest off for spares, so body panels glass trims interior etc.
Would be great if you have a triple garage space to do this, as said, keep us all posted 🙏👍

Just to add, I put a 3.5 V8 into an mgb roadster back in the 80's of course 'electronics' consisted of a coil, distributor and plugs, so way easier 👍
