I’m looking to put a low mile 2005 XK8 transmission into a 2004 XKR. Are there any differences between the two ZF6HPs? Are the torque converters and valve bodies the same? Thank you!

 

I would not put a non-SC transmission into a SC version. Yes there are differences between them.

When working with the 6 speed ZF the metal tag on the transmission needs to match.
This is the tag your looking for on the transmission case.





Next there are also variations in the valve body and they also carry a serial number.





So see if you can find your tag and get the numbers off it. I would look for a SC version.

They do have different Jaguar part #s, although I have no idea what the differences may be.

 

Be aware that the Valve Body (mechatronic) contains the TCM.
To keep the VID block 'happy' I would use the original TCM swapped over to the replacement unless you plan on attempting to reconfigure the replacement.

 

No issues, I have an AVOS KB kit and I figured I should go through everything if I was going to throw it on! I’m already around 156,000 miles. Buying an entire XK8 is cheaper than going through the trans that’s already on the car. I’d throw in a low mile donor transmission and part the rest out.

 

I believe the difference in the XKR and XK8 transmissions is that the Mechatronics/TCMs are programmed differently. Following Bob's excellent advice to use the original Mechatronic should resolve this issue.

While you're doing the Mechatronic swap, replace the valve body bridge seal and tubular seals, and the electrical connector sealing sleeve, since they all deteriorate with age despite mileage.

I used to get them from California Transmission Supply Co. (thectsc.com), but their site has gone down. FCP Euro carries the electrical connector sealing sleeve, ZF part number 24347588725. I don't see the valve body seals. If no one else posts those part numbers before tonight I'll look them up.

From my records, here are the Jaguar and ZF part numbers, as well as a few for Eriksson, which is a major supplier to professional transmission repair shops (at least in the U.S.).

The parts are typically a lot less expensive from a ZF parts supplier than a Jaguar parts supplier. Give the ZF supplier your transmission serial number so they can confirm the correct part numbers.
