This is my first year and experience with a Jag and I'm wondering if there is any benefit to using Synthetic when I drive less than 2,000 miles a year and change oil every year.

Since your car is older I personally would find out what they had been using previously. I would not go from reg. oil to a synthetic, for fear of the Urban Ledgend that your seals would suffer and cause the vehicle to develope leaks..and Visa Versa....

Mine is a 2005 and only had 22,500 miles but because of age I stayed with the standard Castrol GTX 5 - 30w the dealer used for the oil change,,, And I prefer synthetic oil... I do change mine every 2500 miles,,, or 6 months which ever comes first....

Gives me something to do

Merry Christmas

"...the Urban Ledgend that your seals would suffer and cause the vehicle to develope leaks..and Visa Versa...." is just that. An urban legend.

IMO some people can get too involved and technical in discussing what oil to use. If someone wants to get really deep into this topic go over to - Bob is the Oil Guy and discuss oil til the cows come home.

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic in all my cars and change it usually 3-5,000 miles or once per year if mileage is less.

Gordo - Point well taken,,, But I just don’t feel like rolling the dice (or comfortable) on changing the type midstream, When I change it often enough anyway…

But My Uncle Alfredo a meticulous 89 yr old Italian man once said to me ( in fact he says it every time I see him and take him to the store)

Ascoltami. Se si cambia l'olio ogni 800 miglia non avrà problemi.
E 'la linfa vitale del motore. Ora mi ascolti. Ok?
Listen to me. If you change the oil every 800 miles you will have no problems.
It is the life blood of the engine. Now you listen to me. Okay?

Now that being said: His first car was a 1960 Chevy Impala Loaded,,, He changed the oil every 800 -1000 miles and drove it with no problems till it was stolen from the docks in NYC with 162,000 no big deal right?? His next car a Pontiac sold it with 387,000 miles,MINT,,, next car was an Olds Cutlass 288,000 miles the mechanic bought it,,, Next car Honda Accord 229,000 miles gave it to me and I sold it with 254,000 or so I forget exactly,,,
So I will spend the time and money to (do what someone might say is over doing it) Change the oil every 2500 miles Max sooner if it looks dirty…. And keep the type consistent. If my Jaguar was 1 yr old with 22,000 I would switch to synthetic,,, But 6 yrs and really no miles,,, I’ll use what the dealer and Jaguar initially put in… Sat with regular oil for too long in my eyes,,, But again I am not a chemist and do not know what if any effects might be had by changing…

What I own now and the mileage:
2005 Jaguar XKR Castrol GTX Reg. oil 5w–30 25,600 miles
1997 BMW Synthetic 161,000 miles
1995 XJ6 (sold) synthetic blend 141,000 miles $20 bill at buddies shop,,, yes even though its almost 9 quarts
1999 Toyota Avalon synthetic blend 196,000 miles $20 bill at buddies shop
2000 Lexus ES300 synthetic blend 98,000 miles $20 bill at buddies shop
1981 Porsche 924 Turbo (931) Synthetic 60,000 miles
2000 Mitsubishi Galant Castrol GTX 80,000 miles son’s car

On the Jag, BMW, Porsche and Galant ,,, I buy the Oil and Filter at Walmart and give Franky $15-$20 for lift time and change it myself,,, and he'll do the tires, fliuds ETC,

Merry Christmas,,,
Buon Natale,

Default Mobil 1

Mercedes and Porche insist on Mobil 1 or equivalent to maintain warranty. If that's good enough for Mercedes and Porsche, I use it in my XK8 and change annualy or at 10000 miles. I use 10w30 here in Florida, but would go to 5w30 up north.

There are a lot of good oils these days. I prefer Mobil 1, but there's other good synthetics. Synthetics do have advantages over dino oil, but I think paying $10+/qt for Amsoil, Royal Purple or Redline is just throwing money away. Egen if you drive the car hard the M1 is plenty good. The filter makes a bigger difference. Read up at BOBISTHEOILGUY for more details. Don't waste your money on the Fram filters. I used to buy Frams TG filters and change them 2X during the life of the oil, but there are better filters that will keep your oil super clean the whole time. Our Jag filters cost at least $8.50 anyway, so get the Bosch and let it do its job.
