Default ABS/Trac Issue new harness didn't work, how to check codes?

Hi Everyone,

Have a 2003 XKR that had the intermittent ABS warning that has devolved into a nearly constant error alert. It would clear when I turned the car on and then pop up on a left turn leading me to believe it was the right front harness wire. Replaced it today but the code is not even clearing anymore even on start up! I tried cleaning the connectors and everything seems to be fitting snugly. Strangely, yesterday I had two full rides where the error message did not pop up which was the first time in ages that has happened. It was also a very rainy and wet day.

Anyways, before I start to drill into the module to check the solder joints I thought I should see if my Actron CP9185 would read the codes. It is a more advanced model so I thought it would have that capability but I cannot figure out how to find these codes. Does anyone know how to read them? Also, any ideas on what I might want to try? I have cleaned all of the sensors to no avail and replaced the right front ABS harness with a brand new one.

Thanks so much!

Corey

Try putting the right harness on the left side??

The DTCs are the proper way to diagnose but throwing parts at the car might eventually fix it?

Definitely going to try that. I was wondering, are they interchangeable? If so, it seems odd that they would even label a part left or right and have different part numbers. As for throwing parts at it, I suppose I fell into that trap. I truly thought it had to be that side's harness given how I could trip the error code by turning the wheels to the left but not to the right. This is why I would like to be able to read the codes. From what I have gathered on this forum, there are codes and they indicate where the fault is being triggered. Was hoping to not throw any more parts at it!

I did not know that the link harnesses were 'sided' from VIN A30645.
Not looked up a harness for a while but the older cars used the same part for both sides. (to VIN A30644)

Never mind.

My XK8 had similar warning lights, i watched a video about replacing the wheel speed sensors, (about 10 minutes per wheel) bought 4 online (cheap) had the dealer install them (cheap) - never had the problem again.

You can use the Torque Pro app for your cell phone and an ELM 327 Bluetooth OBDII adapter to get your codes. It will give you the chassis codes for the brake sensors as well as the powertrain codes.

Great advice, thank you! I just bought the bluetooth on Ebay and will buy TorquePro when it comes in. This will come in handy for sure.

Thanks for the tip. I thought mine looked good but you can never know for sure and it probably is not a bad idea to replace the 4 sensors with the cost being so low. I am going to wait for the bluetooth OBDII scanner first to see what the ABS codes are and hopefully it will pertain to the sensors or wires and not the module.

I just had a customer that bought 4 cheap wheel speed sensors for his XK8 hoping it would fix his ABS fault light coming on.
He showed up and I diagnosed ALL speed sensors were inop (no reading).
I asked if he saved the old ones and he said YES so he went home and reinstalled the old sensors.

He drove back to my shop and I saw an intermittent RF wheel speed sensor fault so he ordered a link harness and replaced it.

DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

Be careful about throwing parts at a problem without knowing what the problem IS.

While I have indeed had one of the factory wheel speed sensors to fail a few years ago, it is much more common to suffer from a break in the wiring harness....

Default Autel code reader

I had the same issue and also got tired of throwing parts at it. Finally bought a code reader that could read Jaguar ABS codes. My code ready gives me the option of reading OBD codes, live data, Air bag codes and of course ABS codes. The ABS codes are dependent on the manufacturer and the VIN number in the case of my XK8. Once I got the correct code Cxxxx I went to the workshop manual and went step by step leading to replacing the left front harness. Problem solved. I would not be inclined in switching the right harness to the left or going the other way as on the left front side you are dealing with the ABS unit being in the way and while not difficult still a PITA.

There is also an excellent document for tracking down the issues on the ABS.

Cannot wait to get the OBDII bluetooth device and be able to read these codes! Will be great to have more diagnostic information to work with. In the meantime, I am going to switch the left harness with the one that I removed from the right side to see if it makes any difference. Fingers crossed!

Fantastic, thank you for the link. This will make a big difference if we have to get deeper into diagnosing the problem. Will keep everyone posted on how things progress with the the left harness and once I get the bluetooth OBDII scanner.

Problem solved! Just wanted to get back to the thread and let everyone know that it was actually the right wire harness. I switched out the one the old right side harness that was replaced with the new harness with the driver's side harness and the error went away! What a relief. Thank you all for helping think this one through. So much appreciated! Happy motoring!

Just to throw this in, it always seems to be the right front harness that gives problems. Mine did too.
