Default accordian tube from air box to throttle body

Mechanic recently removed this crusty brittle old thing and now show splits on top side (pictured) and underside.

Been getting "restricted performance" warning and no power over 3000rpm. I believe this is the culprit...(sucking unmetered air after MAF sensor).

Gonna do a quickie wrap with electrical tape to test theory, but need a replacement regardless.

Whats the name of this tube and any clue to the cost ???

Those cracks will indeed cause restricted performance issues once they get large enough....

I replaced ours in October 2012 after I found those same splits in the accordian pleats while cleaning the MAF sensor. It is called the Air Intake Duct. I negotiated the price down to $117. List price was about $140 or so. The part number for our 2006 XK8 was C2N1041....

Ditto for me. Tried wrapping with gaffer's tape as a first stop-gap approach, but quickly replaced. Amazing how brittle the darn thing had become.

Agreed. They get brittle after just a few years. Based solely on quality, it SHOULD be a $25 part....

It get brittle after a few years because it sits directly above the exhaust manifold.

I purchased a 3"X6" Silicone tube, used on turbo's, cut the according section out and installed the new SMOOTH tube, works great and not worried about the heat.

So you attached the new silicone tube in between the old sections of the air duct after cutting out the accordian-pleated section?

If so, how did you clamp and seal the two ends?

I put 40k miles on a Volvo with split accordion duct sealed with 2 layers of neatly installed electrical tape and it was very nearly invisible.

Default Accordian Tube Repair

I cut the pleated section at each end, lightly sanded the rough edge. slid the tubing on and clamped each end with stainless hose clamps.

Had similar problem on XKR, at the local dealer had chat will storeman and found out that there are at least 2 different items for my 2000MY, the correct numbered one (?) was twice the price of the earlier numbered one (and not for my car) It looked the same so took a chance and bought that one,
Upon fitting it the only difference is that on the throttle body there are 2 bolt tangs and 1 of them did not line up, about 1/2 inch difference.
Its now been on over 12 months and nearly 2000 miles and is still nice and tight (I did change the TB seal as well) so saved some petrol money,
So check out what is available before you buy.
Happy driving

I just received the pipe I bought from eBay, as noted in earlier threads, for my 1999 XK8. I haven't fitted it yet but it looks like a dead ringer for my OEM one, except for the splits in the bellows!

My '87 Alfa spider had a hard rubber tube like that between the MAS and intake and those cost twice as much as the ones for the Jag, I degreased it the best I could and used black roofers silicon on it and even after many years it never failed. The worst ones were on Triumph TR7's like the 1980 I had. They were oval and a different size on each end and odd sizes. And made from unobtainium.

Here are a couple of pic's of the silicon pipe install on my 2001. Still believe the smooth surface will provide better air flow than air passing over the accordion.

Nice job indeed. I replaced my wife's XK8's worn-out intake air duct with the dealer part in October 2012. Still paid way too much for it even after negotiating the price down. If we keep her car long enough for the accordian section to get brittle and crack again, I'm going to implement your fix. Good luck with it and keep us posted....
