You've certainly got your hands full...I'm assuming you've done work of this scale before.

Maybe when you get the car back on the road, you could finish up the garage?? LOL

Great project.

How 'bout telling us more about what you're doing. We're bored with window resets and oil leaks. Give us something to sink our teeth into!

well, my transmission started making that clunking noise. I realized it was that ring going out in it. I decided to take the engine and transmission out of the whole car and do the timing chain job completely(out of car). I am waiting for a remanufactured hp transmission -torque converter and all. Yes I've been doing this type of work on amercan cars and I found out that its all the same minus special tools. I put together and took apart that timing mechanism 10 times just to make sure I had it right. Im ready to drop it back in and get rolling.

I would really enjoy a full engine-out refurbish someday. In a perfect world, I'd take apart the entire engine, clean everything and rebuild it perfectly, bit by bit. And here's the key...I would need a buddy there working with me, or at least checking in often, who really knew what he was doing. Without that kind of help, I'd be afraid to try it.

But it would be a fantastic learning experience.

coupe when do you plan on doing it? Im way on the west coast. dang that would be a fun project, rebuilding the whole engine. but I must warn you. I paid around 700 for the timing chain kit. that included the whole thing 4 guides, 4 tensioners, timing cover seals vvt seals, upper seals for valve covers (which i didnt need). i went thru christophers in new jersey for that deal. oh yea and 4chains. I said what the heck and purchased the special tools thru motor cars for 300. once I took the engine out, I realized that I needed new motor mounts. mine looked like toast. i tore the wire from the crank shaft sensor so i needed that. My water pump have the black prepellar so Im puting it back on. this job for just the engine is about 1600 so far. the tranny itself is 1700 . So I could imagine what rebuilding this aluminum block would cost. Oh yea i broke a bolt in one of the timing guides. I had to put the whole engine in my pickup and take it to this race shop. a specialist their repaired my screw up.

that cost me 100 bucks to drill it out and put a insert. dont try to abstract a bolt out of an aluminum engine unless you know metal work. those blocks melt like plastic once heat from a drill bit is applied

Oh, I'm (hopefully) 50,000 miles away from that project, if it ever happens. I think it would be fun, though.

That's the sort of thing I loved doing back in my hot rodding days. We'd have the engine and tranny out just to detail the engine compartment. With a couple of buddies on a Friday night after school it would be on the ground. Saturday cleaning and letting the paint dry that night. Engine back in on Sunday and driving it back to school on Monday morning. All fresh and clean.

Thinking about that kind of project when my 97 hits 200k. Need to find a couple of friends now that are so inclined. This time, at my age it will probably take a couple of months. (that's my wife with the stick)
