Sounds like you are coming to terms with it well.
Forgot to give you the hint to force 9141, so long ago since I set mine up.
I have my alarm set for 105°C to err on the safe side. Then if it goes off I can get it out for visual monitoring. As I keep mine in the centre arm rest (tucked the cable out of the way through dash etc), unless I am wanting to monitor or check something.
If I remember correctly I turned off the alarm for pending trouble codes, as it kept alerting for P1111, which is not a fault condition.

I have been using a ScanGauge for years. It has the same functions as the UltraGauge, but is a bit easier to mount. I mount mine on top of the steering column cover with velcro. I have an off-on false alarm about an intake vacuum leak. It throws a code. In fact, there is no vacuum leak that I can find. My wife drives the car mostly, and she simply resets the CEL using the ScanGauge.
