Broken chain

If money for the extra parts isn't a big deal I would- in the interest of showing the kids "the right way" to do things- ie, when you are already in there, may as well do the whole job to avoid having to do it again in a year or 3 months. added benefit is it will run like a TOP when done.

Consensus here seems to be to use MLS gaskets from the 4.2 rather than replace with the fibre originals.

Quick update. The machine shop found 4 bent exhaust valves, a couple worn keepers, and the intake valves needed a little attention. They are doing a valve job, cleaning the heads, and replacing the valve seals. I should have everything back on Monday or Tuesday. I did order new head bolts along with the gasket set. Just waiting.......

The INTAKE valve will NOT contact the pistons if the PRIMARY CHAIN is still intact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The EXHAUST cam is the one that STOPS when the chain breaks!!
The INTAKE cam does NOT CARE that the Exhaust cam stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (remove cam and perform a compression test OR cylinder 'leakdown' test)
Sometimes the exhaust cam stops in a HAPPY PLACE and no contact with piston. I bought a car with a broken secondary chain and NO damage to valves.
The exhaust cam stopped in a HAPPY PLACE.
The only other problem I have seen when the secondary chain breaks is when the BROKEN chain 'winds around' the sprocket and pushes out a section of the aluminum head. REPLACEMENT head required!!

Hey I meant to post an update earlier. When I had said on the 20th of December the machine shop found the bent valves they worked everything out of course. They said the intake valves weren't seating properly so they lapped all those in then replaced the four bent exhaust valves. I had to pick up a couple keepers from Jaguar that were worn. When I got the heads back they looked like brand new. Unfortunately, and this is the reason for the slow response, we started winter break so we were off until the 4th. To make a long story short we started back on putting the car together as soon as we returned but our school runs an A B schedule so I only have my upper level student every other day. The car is 95% done with only a few odds and ends to button up. I will post this week when I get it running but, fingers crossed, I'm anticipating no problems. Thanks again for everyone's advice and direction.

The Jaguar sprung to life. It was hard finding time to close the quarter and work on the Jag but we did it putting in some hours after school. Starting the car it had a little bit of a misfire and I found a loose coil wire. With the coil covers in place the harness has dried out and become brittle. Still works but I have left the covers off to hopefully aid in the harness staying cooler. This car is really quite. It is smoking a little but when it had the bent valves the Jag smoked a whole lot. Now that it has run for a couple hours the light smoke is subsiding. Over the weekend I took the ol Jag home to clean it up. The previous owner lived on a heavily wooded lot and I didn't clean it before starting the work. Unfortunately I can't get any pictures to load. Other than the clearcoat on the top the Jag cleaned up pretty well. When I have a chance to drive it I will post another update. I have noticed the suspension light is on and the ABS light but I haven't had a chance to scan it. Also the third brake light is flickering. The windows drop a little when the door opens but they don't go back up when closed. So if I open the close the door the window is working it's way down.
I appreciate all your help everyone and I could not of done this without your help!! My students and I appreciate it!!

The windows need to be reset. Up and hold switch until you hear click, then down the same.
You probably won't be able to read the abs code unless you have jag specific software. It's usually either the abs pump solder joints need to be redone, or the brake pedal switch needs to be rebuilt. The solder repair is fairly easy and has been written up on the forum numerous times..
The brake pedal switch has two sets of contacts, one normally closed for cruise control, the other normally open for brake lights. If you crawl in under the dash you can unplug the switch and check for continuity. The outer contacts are for one switch, the inner for the other. Push the pedal and you should hear the click and check that each micro switch is functioning. The micro switches can be replaced at a considerable savings and the part numbers can be fond on the forum with a search.

I have a Solus Pro with european software so I might be able to read the ABS codes. I'm going to try and read them tomorrow either way. RJ also thanks for the information on the windows and I will try that as well. It was surprising to me that the windows are such an easy fix. If I have time I will listen to the switches and check them but that might have to wait until the weekend. I'm ready to drive it but may take it back to the school for a final check over.

One thing about these vehicles is the fact that if the battery is even the slightest bit weak from sitting etc, you can get ABS codes and all kinds of "warning lights". Also, if you check the sticky in the top of the forums, crud easily builds up on the ABS sensors and there is an easy way to clean them with a toothbrush if the battery is not suspect.
P.S. Great work, and I wish I could have taken your class when I was younger! I was fortunate to have my Dad and Grandfather teach me but what you are doing is so invaluable. Thank you. Beautiful Coupe!

Thanks srpope80 I really do try to give my students projects they will be interested in. Being a Jaguar and the level of complexity they really had fun with this one. When I left yesterday it was pouring rain so today i will reset the windows and see if I can scan the car with my Solus Pro and keep you posted.
