I noticed the other day a part hanging down from under the engine on my 2001 Jaguar XKR Coupe. It appears to be some type of wind diffuser or something like that, the plastic piece is hanging down from the cross engine plastic beam beneath the engine. Does anyone have a name or diagram of this piece? I show this car in Jaguar Concours and don't want a judge to look under the car and see a plastic diffuser piece hanging down.
It would be really helpful to have a picture as I think you talking about the rubber diffuser that seems to come off pretty easily (after the second time I just removed the damn thing).

Is it the 2 piece Alternator Cooling Duct?
The horizontal section (arrowed in red) is often missing.
This duct is indeed in the way when draining the oil because it sits just a couple of inches below the oil filter. You must remove it in order to remove the oil filter. Just one 7mm hex bolt holds it in place....
I would wager that the vast majority of those of us who purchased our cars on the pre-owned market are/were missing at least the flat part of this plastic air duct. Oil change shops remove them and in their haste to get the car out the door and on to the next car, they fail to re-install them. I purchased one of these ducts not long after we acquired my wife's 2006 XK8 in February 2012, but I doubt if it really forces much air up into the alternator area. I have kept it installed simply because I purchased it....
This is a clearer picture of the rubber hanging down from beneath the front of the engine. Any idea what this is and should I just cut the rubber off or does it have a real purpose?
Is the part that is hanging down, part #10 Splitter Vane? But you think part #6 Undertray is completely missing. Does anyone have a picture of their XKR showing this Undertray? I wonder what happened to mine? Anyone know the cost to replace?
See now that's the part I thought you were talking about. The undertray also has a rubber part like this on the bottom that tends to peal off with time but you are missing the entire undertray. Not an expensive part and pretty easy to put on. I don't think it comes with the screws or grommets though (can't remember which this used as I replaced mine years ago) but its an easy job once you get the car in the air. I'm guessing the rubber part you have pealing off is some kind of gasket for it, never noticed that when I changed mine out.
My 2000 XKR and My 2003 XKR both had the Undertray with a Rubber gizmo attached along the front of it....In both cases it started pulling out of the grove and hanging down.....I just helped it a little and tore the darn thing off with no problems ever resulting from it. If you need a Windage Tray, you can get one from JagBits.com for an unreasonable price of $380.00....Some where along the way some Mechanic remove the Undertray to work on something and did not replace it.....You need to watch for that......r
Thanks everyone for the comments, I know what I need. Just don't know if I want to spend that amount for something that does not show. I think for now I will remove the rubber hanging down from the "splitter vane".
I took a second look underneath the XKR just now and low and behold I do have the missing underneath tray! I just pulled of the remaining rubber and now nothing shows. Thank you Graham for sending the diagram and explanation. This helped me locate the tray.
Two problems occur when you don't have an Undertray....#1 It might make the Wind Noise louder inside the Cabin and #2. you won't have anything to bolt the Wind Deflectors onto....As I said, some where along the way a Mechanic has removed the Undertray to work on something and just tossed it some where to avoid replacing it...….You really have to watch that...….I thought someone had stolen mine off my 2005 but it is probably leaning up against the wall at some Mechanic's Shop.....I replaced mine and it cost $380.00 plus shipping cost. I was lucky in that the 2005 - 2006 Models don't have the Wind Deflectors, which cost another $48.99 apiece for your 2001 XKR...…
After my discovery, I have found several People who are missing the darn thing...I don't know that it will hurt anything.....but Jaguar put it there for something! I got mine at JagBits.com.
The undertray also gives more rigidity to the plastic bumper by acting as a 'spreader' between the bottom left and right sides.
Note the 4 plastic rivets on either side securing the undertray to the bumper and 3 screws securing the undertray to the lower cross-member.
Incidentally, the Splitter Vane is NOT the part you have identified with the rubber attached - that is the lower cross-member. The Splitter Vane is the horizontal chrome section (arrowed in red) across the centre of the grille.
This was my 2001 XK8 after a front bumper re-paint to get rid of stone chips.
