Default CAR just died on the motorway

Was on my way to France and it just died on the motorway. No warning lights just stalled. I can start it but it is very lumpy and stalls almost immediately. Any idea’s welcome

With understandably very little information to go on, to me it sounds like your fuel pump might have finally gone if it's the original. But that's just a guess in the dark, really. If it were me I'd open the hood and look around for any suspicious or loose wiring around the ignition system, but other than that, yea you're kind of stuck without tools or diagnosis capability on the roadside....

I suppose you could press on the fuel Schrader valve & see if it gives you a healthy spray or not, but if that's the cause, there isn't much you're going to do on the roadside. Not that it helps you here, but I'm remembering @Pistnbroke 's advice to cut an access panel & see how it could be very convenient in the right scenario.

Good luck, and I hope you can figure it out!

Try OBD codes & live data as you have so little to go on as yet.

If it's a 4.0 is it after or before the date where the chain tensioners are a problem?

Yes I always carry a spare pump..(the old one )and the tools to change it ...I only pray there is not 12 gallons of fuel in the tank/no cuts in my hands! You can do it from above but you must have that 7 mm socket .

Just got back and read the code. P0171. Bank 1 too lean. I also have a Idle to low but that makes sense. I have read it out with the IDS. Not completely at home with the system yet. Is there anyway I can dig deeper as P0171 covers a multitude of sins.

Does it still start & stumble, or will it no longer fire?

Can you obtain a fuel pressure reading at the fuel rail?

It is the fuel pump. Has anyone used a non OEM replacement? I wonder if its worth it. Probably better to go for the OEM and never have this problem again

There are indeed quality aftermarket fuel pumps for the 4.0 cars. Quite a few owners here have installed them over the past few years. Usually $100 or so. Just do not make the mistake of ordering the $20-or-less aftermarket pumps....

This procedure is pretty well documented in a few places.

Having just recently done this repair myself, please let me know if you want to discuss. I can PM you my personal # and offer what advice I can.

I used an after market pump .cost about £15...no problems so far .I keep the old one as a spare and could fit it on the road if not too much fuel in the tank.
