Which code reader?
I'm fortunate that so far I have had no major issues with my 2001 XKR so no need to "know the codes". The only exception was when the A/C wasnt working and I got the codes off the console display (just confirmed needed a re-gas) and now code is 0.
Anyway, reading many threads here it seems when things do go awry a code reader is essential so I was thinking of getting one just in case.
However, I have no idea which one would be suitable, and even less idea where the multipoint connector is on my car
There are a number of readers on eBay UK jaguar xkr error code reader | eBay
Could I ask advice as to whether any of these are suitable and if not which one should I get. Oh, and where do I connect it??

If you are looking just for the rare occasion that a code pops up you might take a look at the BlueTooth connected devices to your smart phone or laptop computer and are about $10-$12. They come with software that will read all the Pxxxx codes but that is all most devices do.
I just bought one of these Bluetooth devices and it works really well with my Android tablet using the Torque software. Less than $20 for all of it.

When you first pair the BT device with your device running Torque you will get prompted for a passcode. Mine was 4 digits: 1234 I think they all are the same.
At first it would not accept the passcode but I figured out that if you wait for about 1 minute after you plug it in to your car then try it all is good.

I read on another post that the diagnostic connector is close by the bonnet (hood release) catch - "just hanging there" - well I had a pretty good look today and I can't see it.
Loads of wires but no obvious multipoint connector.
On my 2001 XKR (right hand drive) the bonnet (hood) release is on the side wall of the passenger footwell (would be the drivers side on a LHD car).
Any pointers as to where my connector is located please?

Thank you - got it just where the diag says it should be. Clearly, different placing on LHD and RHD versions.

I recently joined the Forum and was looking for an OBD-II reader. Purchased an Autel MS309 and it did not properly sync up with my 2002 S-type 4.0. With your suggestion, I've just bought one on e-Bay. Many thanks. Will let you know how well it works.
The ELM 327 Bluetooth OBD II code reader works perfectly on my 2001 XKR. No problems linking to my HTC one Android.
Question - is it ok to leave the code reader installed all the time or should it be removed after a diagnostic session?

Not a Jag problem, but a scanner question: My daughter's 2001 Hyundai Elantra has been giving me fits. It runs perfectly...until it dies. Then it can take anywhere from two minutes to 24 hours before it restarts. My old code reader was of little help. I replaced the crank sensor and the fuel pump. New battery and alternator recently. With each repair it seemed to run fine, but would die within 24 hours. Sometimes it would show a CEL, others not. Finally broke down and had it towed to Hyundai last time it stalled. Naturally, she started right up the next day for the dealer and is showing no codes. He can't replicate the problem and is soon going to return the car to me so I can use drive it around until it dies again. Whew! My question is would the ELM 327 give me real-time info while the car is being driven. My hope is a code would show up just as it failed. Any advice welcomed. Thanks!
Steve
It would give you real time information but any code that is set should be held in ECM memory. More likely the issue is one that does not have a code associated. Cannot speak for the Hyundai but the Jaguar fuel system is what is codeless.
Quick answer is yes it will. The one I bought from eBay comes with software disc (windows I expect) but you can get the Torque android app if you have android phone - it is stunningly impressive. So you can pair the reader with the phone and drive around monitoring the dials and scan the codes at will.

I don't have an android phone or tablet but I do have a leptop - will this suffice?

You need to get the USB type for a laptop, not the wireless Bluetooth.
