Default Convertible top pump upgrade odyssey begins

Well it seems the simplest things can cause the most grief. I'm adding the pressure relief valve to the conv top pump, whether it wants one or not. Step one is remove the set screw plug but mine, after 16 years will not budge. Period. I removed the pump from the car, heated the plug to red and still no go. The driver bit broke, twice. I welded a nut to the plug. the weld broke. The whole thing is going to a machine shop today to either extract the plug or machine a new hole and fitting. Damn Sam.

Hope you haven't cooked the internals. Red hot sounds a bit drastic!

The body didn't get as hot as it might seem, because it's a billet. Just the plug got hot and it only took a couple of seconds to do it. I had hoped that it would soften any loctite or such. The rest of the top system is in excellent shape, like new really, and I think it's important to get the upgrade installed in hopes of preserving it. If the pump won't cooperate than I don't see other choices than to get the plug out or replace the pump.

A few had problems in removing the plug sorry you are one of them. Taking it to the machine shop seems to be the right thing to do.

Success!! The friends at the machine shop, with a drill press and an easy out, removed the plug. Any thoughts about how too flush this thing in the right direction. It may not be necessary but maybe better safe than sorry.

The only flush is to empty the tank, fill it and run your system and empty and refill. Not necessary if the fluid is green.
