Cruise Control Question
While I'm working on my '01 XK8 not clearing some OBD2 codes I thought I'd check some of the other small issues I've found. I noticed the cruise control doesn't work so I searched the thread on that issue. When I press the on/off button under the J gate the red light comes on. There are no messages on the dash regarding the cruise control not working. The fuse in the fuse box is good. In some of the threads I've read that if the switches on the brake pedal are out then a notice about the cruise control not working will show up on the dash. In other threads people have said they did not get this message yet there was a bad switch. I understand there are 2 of these switches somewhere on the brake pedal under the dash. I'm figuring I'll need to get under there and see if there's a loose connection or just replace the switches.
Is there any place else I should be looking for this issue?
Also, the boot does not open when I press the button on the top of the lid. It opens with the button on the fob, with the button on the dash and obviously when I use the key in the lock. From what I'm reading there is a wire that tends to break that runs from the button to the latch release motor and I need to trace that wire and either replace it or repair it. Does this sound like it's correct?

There are four wires in the brake switch plug. The outer ones are for one circuit, the inner for the other. Connect your VOM to the wire pairs and check for continuity with the pedal depressed and out and see if you have a open circuit.
Not sure about the boot release problem, but I think the wire that breaks would prevent the button on the dash from working as well as the button on the lid, so it may be your problem is with the lid button itself.

1. There are 2 micro switches ( #'s posted elsewhere) in the OEM Brake light switch. I do not think the Cruise will operate w/o the Complete switch working properly. 2nd, the Harness, at the Hinge on the Right side of lid is broken and needs repair. Remove the harness from the Deck lid and unplug from the trunk and solder back together. try to immobilize that area when you re install the harness. Link attahed

Hey Z,
yes. after i engaged the CC with the button under the J gate and got a red light i pressed the "set" button at about 60 mph and lifted my foot off the gas and the speed went down. I tried at a few different speeds and none held.

Might the cruise control not have been used for a while? I ask because my STR was like that (it turned out) when I got it but started working after quite a few drives (where I tried to use cruise each time) - so I guess dirty contacts.

Sadly I did change my car, though. Wanted something smaller.
The trunk button doesn't work because the wire in the trunk lid harness has broken, as stated above. Also check your license plate illumination and 3rd brake light, as those are all part of that harness. The trunk latch release appears to be part of a different harness that goes through the body, hence your dash button working and the trunk button now.
I lucked out and found a nice used harness from NOMA. Taking off the trunk lid liner is a bit of a PITA.
