Default Discarding nuts and bolts

Guys, any idea why this should be so.

Also I see a few places selling packs of 5 for the first 3 which seems odd.

Jaguar recommends discarding a lot of things which IMHO don't need to be discarded.
Commonsense and a good helping of Scottishness should prevail.

Perhaps they are TTY (torque to yield) Bolts. TTY are to be used only once and then replaced. Usually a marking on head that's different from other grade markings. They stretch at specified torque and remain at that length. Only use once.

I think they are Nylocks - which shouldn't really be re-used.

That's where the commonsense comes in.

On the S you are supposed to discard the caliper mounting bolts when changing brake pads. Nonsense IMHO. YMMV.

Lots of makes now say to discard caliper bolts.

It might (or might not) be to save time and be sure to have new (and the right kind of) locking compound.

Those bolts in the OP... maybe reused ones can vibrate loose and fall out or can snap.

Given the amount of rust and non-working parts in my XK8, which was taken off the road at 11 years old, I'm thinking that the ethos is actually "Wait 11 years, discard car and buy a new one" Replacing a few bolts strikes me as just the starting point of that process...

The replacement bolts generally have a reddish locking compound applied to the threads.

If you notice the compound when they are removed, then simply apply some MEDIUM strength compound and re-use.

It turns out that the axel nuts have a crimped top to grip onto the stud.

The A-frame bracket bolts are just bolts with a thread lock patch. Unfortunately, they, along with others screw into weld nuts in the body. Because of the thread locking, the body cavities "cannot" be anointed with cavity wax. Therefore we get rot in areas that could well do without it. On my XK8 I replaced these bolts with stainless, liberally coated with copper grease, and fitted them after the volt holes were used for access to spray cavity wax in there. It is unlikely that there would be a "sudden death" failure if the driver has working ears and picks up something knocking. I would rather have a car that has a slight chance of something working loose than one which is quietly rotting away.
