Default Disco third brake light.

1999 XK8 COUPE third brake light is now strobing. I have pulled the assembly and have retipper the connections on the circuit board but to no avail. Is it dead or do I need tto replace the bad LED's or try to buy a new assembly.

Some people have added a flashing module for the CHMSL. Are you sure that this has not been done to your car?

Nothing like that has been added. It has been working since I got the car in 2004. Just trying to figure this little quirk out. Not sure the two are related but I have noticed that the passenger rear backup light is now not working . But no alert from computer about bulb failure either. That bulb failure was a constant pain when I got the car but I added an extra ground wire to both tail light assemblies and have had no problems until this episode

What is the price of a replacement unit?

A new unit is about $250.00 us. Just thought that was high for an incedental part. Next choice would be to see if I can get replacement LED module to solder in place. My engineer son told me that all LED's are run in series and carry spec amperage so I would not be able to jumper wire across bad LED. I know this sounds like a whole lot of trouble but time I wave plenty of. Money on the other hand : (

I don't think I would consider it an incidental part! Federal law has required them since the 86 MY and you can get a ticket for it not working properly just as you can from a defective brake or turn signal light. Fines can be pretty steep in some states!!

The backup bulb failure will not trigger a MIL message, it is a bulb that is not monitored by the computer. As for your disco 3rd brake light...sorry, no idea why its flashing...how about a video so we can see? I'd be curious to see the pattern.

The third led from the left to right doesn't work and the third led from the right to the left will strobe for a few seconds but not all the time, most of the time it's not working. The rest of the leds work fine. I'll stick with the unit that I have until all of the leds go out.

Sorry to say the third light is offically dead. I am going to see if the led brake light from Classic Design Concepts off my 1994 light bar set up for my Mustang will fit. If this does work the replacement lamps from CDC is $20.00 us. I'll do pics if this works. I really do not want to give jag $250.00. Tinkering is more fun. Besides anyony can just buy the replacement part.
