Default Draining the entire tank through fuel filter connection

So, I'm 6 14 gallons of petrol/gas into a fuel filter replacement. I expected a small amount of fuel, but I started collecting it when it was spilling from the driveway into the street and my lawn. Four Six Fourteen gallons collected, I expect the next 10 8 0 gallons will come out too. (note: no more gallons left to come out)

This seems like an inefficient way to transfer fuel between my vehicles, any thoughts on stopping the constant but relatively slow deluge? At this point, it will stop either
1. because of something I do short of dropping the tank, or
2. it runs out of fuel since I have a plethora of cars to transfer it too.

I assume siphoning from the fill is not an option because of some anti-siphon feature?
Problem solved, out of gas.

did you not depressurize the fuel system before removing the filter?? Should only spill what's in the filter - not much more

Tis depressurized at the rail. Has to be siphoning from the tank at this point. Unclear how that is working.

Gas caps off right? Yes obvious I know but I almost suggested letting the fuel pump do the work .

Yes, thanks for this thought, as the gallons kept leaking, gas everywhere, many many thoughts came to mind....

Immediate problem solved, no more gas. I guess I'll dig into the fuel system some time soon. Probably not with a fulliish tank.

I've had just a few cars leak and NOT stop during fuel filter change. I imagine the check valve in the pump is faulty?

Was wondering. Does this have any other implications (other than every leak siphoning out the whole tank), or should I just make sure I'm low next time?

Dale, did not have that trouble changing filter on my 2000, but when changing the fuel pump a couple of months ago. I drained it from the fill hole.
Used a 1/4 inch inside clear plastic hose attached to the hand pump I got at HF. Took a while and it was only 6 gallons, so a electric pump would be better.
The length installed from the mouth of the fill hole was 44 inches and it got all but a pint or less out. The two pipes set up from the bottom of the tank by about 1 and 1/2 inches, so a gallon could still be in there.

Appreciate it, I suppose this is a good trick for next next time. Run it down, see what I can take out with this approach, change the filter. Unless I need to replace the fuel pump for some reason. I have a pneumatic pump, which seems good for this. I knew I installed an air line in my garage for some reason.

Dale, If you need to rep[lace the fuel pump, just say when and Jon and I can make a road trip, even if we just bring support and a couple of tools.

Yep; we can definitely help. We just went through a fuel pump replacement on Wayne's 2000 XK8 back in January. Wayne now has all the tools needed (especially that skinny 22-inch-long flat-blade screwdriver with the custom-ground tip used to release the fuel lines underneath the car) and we also know exactly which curse words to shout at each stage of the job...

Shoreguy,

After the pandemic is long gone, we should arrange a group meeting at Wayne's shop in Spencer. We could all then head out for a great BBQ lunch at one of the local joints. Perhaps on a gorgeous North Carolina autumn day come October....
