Default Driver side rattle

Hey guys, thanks in advance!
1999 xk8 convertible
have had this one for 2000 miles(rattle included). I have a rattle in driver side rear that I can’t find the source.
Have pulled drivers door panel ....all good
Have pulled rear interior out and replaced the hydraulic rams for the top. While in there I inspected for anything loose or missing. Locktighted everything upon installation, all seems good.
went thru trunk and searched area by gas tank and found a hanging telephone jack that could have been the problem and wrapped in foam to eliminate.
Pulled driver rear wheel off and inspected suspension etc... all looks good
Only saw a slightly torn bumper foam looking piece surrounding the shock cavity. Marginal from suspension and brakes
hangind down with wheel off.
any ideas? Driving me nuts!
thanks again.

I get my rattle (ting) from slight variations in road to more regular bumps to where you can feel the rear wheel working. Sounds like a piece of metal rattling against something as in like a wrench rattling between 2 pieces of metal. My abandoned phone cable jack may be the culprit. I am drivin home in a while and will see.

i have also used magnets into the quarter panel by rear window to retrieve anything metallic but nothing.

Does it do it with top up, down or both?

When I first got my car I found one of the the tension rods in the top had popped out of its hole in the top's frame. Made a metallic clanky noise only when top was up.

Rear upset shock mount wear makes an obnoxious rattle.

Just rolled out of my shop . Leaving my shop(1 mph) to lot there is an 1” drop. Causes the rattle but very faint . Top is up now . The noise is not in the top it’s lower in quarter panel. The harder you hit a ledge or bump the more magnified the rattle.
I will drive later with top down to see if matters.

Listened to it real hard on way home. After reading replies it must be in the rear shock. Looking at replacement instructions I think I’ll go for new shocks all around . Being a 99 new shocks can’t hurt and bushings and hardware included for a couple hundred. As this is my daily driver I’ll check for play as described in another post I read and off we go! I’ll keep you guys posted. Thanks for the input!

All the bushings you need are not included with the shocks. The likey worn part is not in the shock assembly.

You will need to purchase these separately MMD3565AA

It could also be the internal valve broken off and rattling around inside one or both of the rear shocks. The shock functions normally even with the valve broken off. A new shock and the associated new shock mount fixed it for my wife's 2006 XK8 way back in October 2014. Although only one rear shock was affected, Wayne (cjd777) and I replaced both of them. Problem solved....

Drove my wife crazy with the top up. With the top down, you could not hear it. She lived with it for about three months until we finally figured it out....

Long shot - could be the rear drum brake (for the hand/emergency brake).
Check out my thread below.

Update!! Pulled the driver side shock off and found the top bushing completely wasted. Built some new polyurethane spacers and reinstalled ,all is good!

Kim, nice job!

BTW- thanks for the update, it's nice for those who put the time in to help you out and especially nice as a reference for all of us down the road.

Glad you nailed it.
