Default Engine number location?

Helllo,

I am trying to find the engine number on my 2000 XKR convertible in order to obtain a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate for my car. Searching this forum, internet, and YouTube I found what I believed was the engine number on a pad near the thermostat housing. I am told that is actually the engine build date when decoded, which turns out to be true telling you the date and time down to the minute when your engine was built.
According to the Jaguar Heritage Trust Centre, that is not the engine number. It starts with the letters "PA" with 6 numbers following that. They were not able to tell me where it would be located. I have looked all over the engine visually and with a video inspection scope with no luck.
Any help or ideas as to where I might find the engine number would be very much appreciated.
I apologize if this information is posted elsewhere as I did not see anything on this.

Thank you

Early engines = left side of the thermostat housing on engine block.
Later engines = aft of the left motor mount. (side of engine)

I wonder if you were speaking to the janitor at Heritage?

Its own documentation (see attached page #4: - 2004 but still valid - location 'B') states that the engine number on the earlier cars is where you found it. I expect it would be 99nnnn nn:nn or 00nnnn nn:nn on your car. There may be a pair of prefix letters, but they're not significant, AFAIK.

I wonder why VIN isn't sufficient? Jaguar's records should allow the original engine number to be determined from that.

I can't find any Jaguar documentation (on a quick search) that mentions a 'PA' engine prefix.

Thank you for the info. I will check aft of the left motor mount. That would be the driver's side on a USA spec car, correct? I have the number from the block left of the thermostat housing which is what they say is just the engine build date.

LOL, I was thinking along those lines also. Actually it was a woman. I would have thought that the VIN would be sufficient and tell them everything, but I guess not.
My number from location 'B' is as follows 000531 and below that is 2222. That decodes as year (00) 2000, (05) Month-May, Day (31) at 10:22 PM. which shows it to be the original engine in my car with a build date of 06/00. I also have not seen anything as far as the letters "PA" anywhere on the engine. The search continues.
Thank you for your help.

It is the engine build date (it includes hh:mm to make it unique) - which, to most of the rest of the planet, is the engine number.
Here's a snip from Heritage's own guide pulled from the website, for heavens sake...

Might be easier to email rather than clock up a telecoms bill.

Yes, I have their guide and reviewed it with the woman. She insists that the engine number starts with "PA" and the build number is not the engine number.

I am at a loss. They will not provide a certificate without the required numbers (VIN, Engine, Transmission), and photo of the title. I have given them everything except the engine number they are asking for.

Thanks again for your help and comments, much appreciated

By the way, I am now communicating via email.

I got the engine number from a dealer inquiry scan in 2012.

Was your engine number the same as the engine build date number or did it start with "PA"?

Thanks for the information.

I'd suggest just making one up but it might end up on your certificate instead of the correct one.

You're in the US so you might have better luck going via the JCNA if you've hit a brick wall.

Both of my 2000MY XKRs have the engine date code stamped at the left of the 'thermostat housing'. (actually the coolant inlet housing)
Mostly impossible to see.(under the cylinder head water outlet area with pipes/hoses in the way)

I have a 2002MY XJR parts car that has the engine date code on the left side block aft of the motor mount. (nothing on the block next to the water inlet)

My 2001 XJ8 sedan has not been checked for engine code but I really have no need to know at this time so I never documented it.

Your engine date code (engine number) will have 6 digits and the 4 digits.
year,year/month,month/day,day. Then hour,hour/minute,minute.
xxxxxx xxxx

No prefix on the early engine date codes, just date and time.

Presumably a CA prefix rather than a PA in this case, then 1996 October 14th, 10:20.

Definitely the engine number so if you you have no prefix before the 10 digits, rather than PA or CA, then it's clearly not needed.

Default Engine Number

My 2001 XJ8 with a 4.0 Nikasil engine had the engine number on the left side of the block aft of the motor mount. About the only way to see it was to remove the front left wheel. It was nowhere else to be found.

I am guessing that the 2001 MY onward (North American market designation) has the engine date code (engine number) on the left side of the block aft of the motor mount.

Up to and including 2000MY has the number near the water inlet.

Agree, my engine date code is stamped in a pad near the water inlet / thermostat housing. Per the Jaguar Heritage Trust people, the engine date code is not the engine serial number.

Thanks for your help
