Default Finally called time on my rusty cat.

No, not the car, just the catalytic converter.

I've welded it up time and time again but this time I decided to remove it to do a proper job, but after getting it off I decided to scrap it as its just too far gone.

I have a second hand unit heading to me now for £100 as there are no aftermarket off the shelf units available in the UK and the OEM is £1700!

Anyway, two of the mounting nuts had dissolved and had to be cut off, I couldn't believe how little there was left of the one on the right. The bracket on the other side was almost completely gone too.

Anyone know what the part numbers are for these nuts, I'm guessing they are not standard nuts.

I bought the studs for the catalyst and then matched them at the hardware store. Here's the part number for the stud listed for the 4.2: C2N1851. I don't see a part number for the nut.

Unfortunately that is for a 4.0 and wont fit the 4.2. Any for the 4.2 say not California, so not confident to import to the UK only to find out they won't pass our MOT test.

Ops, I'd assumed that with the level of rot you have encountered that it was in the range 96-98 ish. 2002? perhaps you were right when you said that the XK8 is the worst rusting car of the modern era

I picked up a cat from a car breaker, £80.

New and old.

Broken studs...

Welded on a nut.

Two nuts on the other stud as there was a bit of thread.

All clear!

Cleaned out the threads

And ready to go back on.

RD - you make these jobs look easy

A little OT, but, out of curiosity, do you know what the advantage is of using studs rather than set bolts & nuts? There looks to be room on the back to manoeuvre.
The down pipe on my daughter's Pinin had the same arrangement and there was plenty of room for a nut & bolt. In the end I let the exhaust co. do the job as I didn't want to shear off the studs and have to remove the whole exhaust to fix.

Thanks,
Mike

This is the first example of rusting where my experience has been the same as yours.

The cats on my X308 and two XK8's were both similarly corroded. The X308 ones had to be replaced as did the 2001 XK8. I sold the 2005 XK8 before it went that far. If members in other countries aren't finding the same thing then it must be the rain and road salt that does it in the UK.

As to fixing studs/nuts, I ALWAYS renew them as appropriate whenever a manifold or part of the exhaust system is dismantled. They are inevitably seized, take ages to remove and rarely suitable for re-use.

Graham

I can only assume its for ease of assembly but don't know for sure.
