Default First 2 Weeks

Finally took the plunge, found a 2001 XKR I took a fancy to. Flew out, gave it a look over and closed the deal. Had a blast on the run back, had a nice mix of highway and twisty back roads. Got to play around on Tail Of The Dragon which was more fun than I expected in a car that big.

And then I get home, start budgeting out for the expected maintenance and such. Tensioners and water pump plus a few little creature comfort gremlins, like the seat controls. Three days home, haven't quite made it to my next day off and I stop off at the store. Come back out and start it up to a nasty rattle. Shut it off, give it a bit and give it one more start to the same thing. So much for preventative maintenance on the tensioners.

Got it towed out to one of the few Jag mechanics in the area who turns out to be swamped. Three days in, get a call back and a quote for the upper and lower, chains, o rings, and various other mixed 'get in there and clean it up' seals and such. $3k already, and a delay to get parts. Now, over a week later and they're just starting on it and I get a call while I'm at work to give them a call back. Fearing more repairs needed, just waiting til I can get in touch with the guy.

Swear, of all the luck to have it go out so soon when it was on my to do list after my next day off. And right after I burned off my 1500 mile warranty with the road trip back. Not that I would have wanted the dealership doing the repair work on it anyways. They had the 9 inch rears up front and the 8 inch fronts in back when I got there. Just want to get back in my new car and enjoy it a bit. Absolutely loved what little seat time I've gotten so far, and hoping once this is done and over with it's done and not a sign of things to come.

What bad luck. The only comfort is that it blew up at home rather than 700 miles away.
I hope the engine's OK.

That's a real scunner, but as Steve says it could have been worse.

I hope it works out with no major damage.

Hope you've got all the bad luck out of the way at the start and you soon get to enjoy it.

Heard back and they're saying bent valves. Still waiting on a new cost/time estimate. They said it was the right bank, asked about doing both for the valves. Will have to hear pricing to decide if it's worth doing. 95k miles on it as it stands.

Really sorry to hear that.
An 'R' is a pig because the supercharger has to come off.
It can be done - some of the folks here have done it but if you can't DIY I'm afraid you've got a difficult decision ahead.

Bummer!
Hope you can get this ironed out, but it goes to show that these tensioners have to be addressed right away, because you just don't know when it's going to happen. It would not be a bad idea to get a second opinion either. Welcome to the Forum and Good Luck.

...to save some $$, you shouldn't have to do the lower chain if the the upper just slipped a tooth and bent a valve. They aren't remotely as problematic as those uppers, and the lower adds quite a bit of labor.

Decided to take it to another shop. Chain was broken but thinking they may have started it up for testing. Week and a half, 2 hours labor in, and they immediately asked if I wanted to do valves on both banks. Didn't even have a quote ready til next say for that. And they quoted full 16 because they didn't know how many were damaged despite their statement of scoping it.

Just didn't feel right. New shop didn't want to do the lowers and is going to do the chain and uppers then test startup and valves. Week wait.

If the chain was okay on the other bank, the valves are okay. Just fix what is broken. I would fix the bent valves, replace the tensioners and broken secondary chain and drive on. I would probably replace the water pump and thermostat while I had it in there unless you can do this yourself.
