Default Fuel additive - misfire

Last week after filling my tank in my 2000 XK8 I put in a fuel additive to clean the injectors of carbon deposits. Within fifteen minutes the limp home mode came on and the engine was clearly misfiring. My mechanic checked the codes and diagnosed a misfire on cyclinder eight. He found a burnt coil and replaced it and now everything seems ok. Maybe it was only a coincidence but I will avoid fuel additives in the future.

I'm not sure what "Additive" you poured into the Tank but I doubt it had anything to do with your #8 Coil Pack going out....Additives that clean the Fuel Injectors should be a must with each Oil change!!!!!
Good Luck with all those Fountains over there!

I also am doubting that any fuel additive is to blame, at worst, most of them do nothing.

i use Chevron Techron complete fuel system cleaner in every other tank of gas, and at every fill up when cross country driving forces me to patronize unknown gas stations. This may be overkill, but I'm trying to undo 116,000 miles of sketchy fuel system cleansing byprevious owners.

I've got a 2001 XKR daily driver with 127000km/79000miles. I change the oil & filter every twelve months. I've never put in a fuel additive. I checked my owners manual and can't find any reference regarding a fuel additive at each oil change. Is this something you only need to do in Texas?

I had a 2003 Corvette that was originally a California car. The previous owner told me that he had to add Techron every month for the car to run properly. Techron is available at Chevron outlets which we do not have here in Australia. I owned the car for four years and never had a problem and never used an additive. So, my question is, could there be something lacking in the fuel in the USA? My sister and her husband live in Florida and he told me he only uses "Top Tier Gas". WTF is that?

top tier gas is a classification created by the EPA in cooperation with the major oil companies. Top tier has more additives than the 2 lower tier designations.

I looked in my manual and find nowhere where I'm told to fill the gas tank when empty, but I do it anyway. Same with fuel additives that are known actually clean deposits. Techron is one of the two I know of that will clean light to moderately dirty injectors. The other one is Seaform.

No, one isn't required to use these products. However, it's been my experience that they will keep the need for new injectors to a minimum.

Maybe the continual use makes the additives just as expensive as would be the need to purchase a set of new injectors more often. But pouring a bottle in the gas tank is easier than an injector installation.

Interesting event. I have had miy XK8 for about 2500 miles. Followed recommendations for use with Chevron Techron. Was driving I get " Restricted Performance (and it was as". Limped home. Seems I sddendly had a dead oil and injector on #1. $100 latter all is good again. Hummm?

I have no actual data to back this up, but isn't throwing fuel cleaner into a fuel system with unknown maintenance history somewhat risky? Aren't you going to risk messing with stuff already collected in the filter (and that should remain there!) and somehow let it go downstream? Best to replace the fuel filter first, THEN do a round of cleaners. Just my thoughts.

The fuel additive I use, Techron, won't dislodge debris build-up, it works by liquifying fuel deposits and other deposits such as dirt and rust flakes. That's why it's pretty much useless if the injectors and fuel filter are heavily blocked. It works best in removal of light to moderate deposits, and as a preventive to keep impurities from settling out of the gas.

Even if it did dislodge gunk in the filter, filter is still there to stop all particles large enough to block an injector from passing thru. That said, there's certainly no harm in starting with a clean fuel filter. And in a perfect world, that would be the best course of action. But I've never had the use of Techron cause the issues you describe. Admittedly, the use of additives is a lazy, or cheap persons way of trying to avoid complete disassembly and bench cleaning of fuel system components.

PS Although my 50+ years in the service industry is lengthy, it's still just a collection of anecdotal experiences, and without real scientific research, my experiences have no more weight that anyone else's.

I like Chevron Techron as well. A 20-ounce bottle of it goes down the hatch of all of our vehicles at every oil & filter change I perform. I have never had any fuel injector issues on any of our vehicles. I have no idea whether or not Techron is part of the reason for that, but I will continue to use it. Techron is the only fuel additive I am willing to spend my money on....

Cool Be Cool my Man!

StuG,

I don't know what you should do in Brisbane, old Buddy! Never been there.....and guess what? It's your XKR and you can do what you want.....! Those little Nozzles need all the help they can get and I'd rather pour Cleaner in the Tank than have to pull them out and send them to the Cleaner Man.....It's easier for me and I'm what counts!!
So, yeah!....It's a Texas thing...I reckon! The other reason is that I have a Snow Performance Methanol/Water Injector that helps cool the load and increase the Octane and I figure that the Cleaner will help take care of any Corrosion that the Methanol might create....Also StuG;.".Sweet Sugar" is BLACK!!!! and Man, She sure is Pretty! Don't ya think?

PS. When a Texan and an Oklahoman agree on anything, the end of the world is nigh.

For those of us that also drove Corvette's (especially C5's) Techron was/is a fast cure for the infamous sulfur corrosion fuel tank sender issue. Cleaned the units up and the gauge worked again. I've also put in in all three of my Rovers and my 98 XK8. Never had any problems.
