Fuel Filter Questions for 2005 XK8
Hi guys,
My 2005 XK8 has been starting up slow from time to time, it cranks fine, but takes about 10 seconds or more to start. This does not happen every time I start it up, initially I thought it was cold weather related but it’s been quite warm (San Diego, CA), it happened twice today; first on a cold start, and again later in the afternoon, so it’s not entirely exclusive to a cold start.
She runs fine while driving and doesn’t seem to have any issues with psi while driving that might indicate the fuel pump is done for (no power loss). Although it should be checked regardless.
After reading a bit here on the forums I’m pretty sure I need to get the fuel filter replaced ASAP, and could also bet it’s the original filter...
Normally I’ve family and friends who can work on this but they don’t have the time at the moment, so just taking it to a shop to replace the filter is a good route at the moment.
I have two questions I am hoping someone here can help with:
- There are two types of fuel filters for the XK I see mentioned; which would be the appropriate part for a 2005 4.2 XK8, and is there a part no. I can use to find it?
- Are there shops anyone is aware of in San Diego, CA that are knowledgeable about Jaguar, that could be recommended, and how much should I expect this to cost roughly?
Hopefully it’s not too far gone that the fuel pump has been affected... Thank you for the help!

When I replaced the fuel filter in my wife's 2006 XK8 at 90,000 miles, I went with a Motorcraft FG-986B. Ordered it from Amazon in early 2015 for less than $12. The fittings were a perfect match. Cleaning up the white plastic release tabs on the hoses on both sides of the original fuel filter made it much easier to see exactly where to press to release....
I lost all sympathy when I read that.

Jon has nailed a more widely available alternative for you. The Jaguar P/N is C2S20977.

There seem to be some sort of cataloging error for these fuel filters for our cars. We need the quick-connect type, not the earlier barb type. If in doubt, order a filter for an S-type 4.2l.
The filter is (somewhat deeply) recessed into the driver side rear wheel well. Without a lift, the rear wheel has to some off. Then, there is a bolt for the band clamp holding the filter. Last, the 2 quick-connect fittings have to be worked to release the filter. The fuel tank does not drain when the filter is free, but the pressure should probably be released before hand. Hard to see this taking more than an hour.

Have to agree with the above ^^^. I got the wrong filter despite the catalog. It is the quick-connect type, and if you can get the connectors to work, it's not all that bad - with the LH side rear wheel off.
Is the C2S20977 listing right or wrong?

Online part store seem to get this part pretty consistently wrong for my '03, e.g. Rockauto. I assume they rely on some meta-data provider somewhere downstream of Jaguar.

So, I did purchase the S-Type 4.2L fuel filter with the quick-connects, but the new filter is approx 1/8" smaller diameter, so the clamp didn't grab it. I used rubber bicycle repair strips (sticky on 1 side) and wrapped them around the new filter aligned with the 2 metal clamp strips. Perfect.
My '05 XK8 is running much better. I had the P0190 (Fuel Sensor) code and so far, so good.
Thanks for the tip.
