fuel filter replacement

It is tricky to find it in the JTIS. I am wondering a good place to buy it up here in Canada? (besides the *******) I went to NAPA and they said they have it and that it is a common GM part. I took a look at it & it looked the same, so I bought it, then when I went to go install I noticed that the NAPA one just has a nut with threads & the OEM has a quick release attachment. I didnt take off the OEM in the case that the new one wouldn't fit.
Does anyone no if these parts are compatiable?
Also, is it required to drain the fuel system the way the JTIS suggests. Can't I disconnect the battery and let the gas drain in to a pan from the filter lines?

Thanks Doug. The JTIS (at least the one I have) only has a description of the fuel filter under the removal and installation instructions found at #310-01. Anyone have the instructions or am I looking in the wrong place?

Its a small price to pay....all these dealers offer significant discounts to forum members.

Well now I feel bad. Bad enough that I might head down there and pick up the $120.00 fuel filter. (which after looking around at jagbits and others who charge $80.00 + ship, might not be as bad as I thought)
Live and learn I guess, no more dealer bashing from me!

There are plenty of dealer only parts we need to keep the dealers happy.

I copied this from my JTIS
Release the fuel pressure. Raise and support the vehicle.
Disconnect the fuel filter to fuel injection supply manifold fuel line.
Disconnect the fuel tank to fuel filter fuel line.
Remove the fuel filter and bracket.
Observe the direction of the fuel filter fuel flow arrow.
Remove the fuel filter. Make sure the fuel filter fuel flow arrow is correctly positioned.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.Tighten to 4 Nm. Tighten to 4 Nm.
Hope this helps.
Also the second button from the right, called the text navigator along the bottom of the JTIS screen helps find many procedures in the program. You may already know about this, but it took me a little exploring to find it.

TAKE OFF YOUR LEFT REAR TIRE!!!
It's soooooooooooooooooooooo much easier to access the fuel filter if you jack up the car and remove the left rear tire. I tried to do it from underneath the first time. It was a pain in the butt. Then I learned that the filter is easily accessible from the left rear wheel well. It's on the front side of the wheel well, about level with the axle, slightly hidden behind some silvery heat shield material.

I didn't think of taking off the drivers rear tire, thanks for the tip rev.
I think my model uses the disconnects but I don't know if I need a removal tool or if its easier than that. I found a video on youtube where a guy changed his on an 05 S typeR. He used a 5/8" disconnect removal tool. Looked similar to my fuel filter.
I would make a how to video if I weren't so shy and clumsy.
