Default Gearbox problem

Hi, I have a 97 xk8 4.00 ltr V8, the problem is a message comes up now & again ' GEARBOX PROBLEM ' but if I turn the engine off then start it again the message goes away and it drives fine, has anyone any ideas what it may be?
regards Dave

ps If I put into drive it will move but really slow

Aside from the gearbox problem have you tried to pull codes?

Did you get a loud clunk before you got the gearbox problem indication?

How many miles on the car and has the transmission fluid ever been changed?

Hi, thanks for getting back, no there was no clunk before I got the message but when I put it in drive it did clunk then when I took it out of drive turn it off then started it again which cured the warning and everything was fine, I did get the codes read and removed and had no problem for at least 4 weeks then it came back again, the car has done just over 55,000 miles, I've had it for approx 3 years and I haven't changed it and I'm sure my friend who had it before me never.just a note it had a factory replacement engine at 11,000 miles if that's any help?
regards and thanks again Dave

If it happens again get the codes read and post them here - without codes it's crystal ball time.

Default have a very similar problem...

haven't had my 99 XJR long but (though undisclosed by the seller) it came with a similar fault ..... albeit you have the ZF box and the XJR has the Mercedes unit they may share the same basic operating similarity

my gearbox fault light comes on after a period of time, usually an hour or so, and car goes into limp mode......third gear while driving and second gear if you come to a stop and restart immediately

however if I give it a little rest it clears and all is normal....for a while

I took it to a gearbox specialist who run a Snap-On diagnostic on it which came up with full results.....however cant recall the numbers em now but 'turbine input over speed' (or something like that) was the evidence for the culprit.....which is 'probably'

1....the electrical solenoid actuator board that attaches to the gearbox valve body

2.... the plug socket that connects the gearbox control module to the solenoid actuator board

both these items with time are susceptible to a little oil getting into them and temperature causing it to short the board or the plug and trip the warning......which go away after you let the car rest a bit

Im not saying 100% this is the cause of your problem but the main advice is take it to a 'very good' gearbox specialist to sort it out

I had a similar problem. Mine is a 06 XK8 having a code P0782 which is a 2-3 shift and the words "gearbox fault". Has 96K miles so am going to change oil/filter, etc and replace the solenoid. Was told it is the EDS2 solenoid with blue top for Clutch B. If anyone can confirm this and/or offer any other advice, I will certainly appreciate it!
