Hello everyone,

I'm having this problem that seems to be getting worse:
When I press the accelerator, and my car is moving faster, I tend to get a grinding noise coming from either under the car or from the engine, but I'm leaning to under. It happens when my speed is ~ 50 - 65mph. When I hear it, I take my foot off the gas and the grinding noise stops right away. Sometimes when I press the gas again, it goes away, sometimes it grinds again. What could this be?

I had a grinding noise but mine was at low speeds and it came from a failed universal joint on the rear axle due to the lack of lubrication. Yours taking place at speeds of 50 – 65 does not seem to be the same cause but for now do not rule it out. I have a question for you, do you hear or feel the grinding and does it change or disappear when you put the car in the sport mode?

 

I'm still having the same issue... to be honest I only use the car in sport mode Gus so I'm gonna turn it off and see if I notice it go away. I hear it, I don't really feel the grinding noise.

 

I am a little old school and would be thinking of wheel bearings If I heard the noise when shifting lanes or making turns. Most of the time “U” joints and you have 4 of them are noticed at low speeds. If the noise is the change of load I would be looking at the differential, in either case I would get it in the air and see what you have it be safe.

 

Hi Exkay8...I had a noise alot like yours. We put the car up on a lift with a "driver inside" and ran it up and down the speed range. We were able to track the noise down to the tail of the tranny. There is nothing like being able to stand under the car and find the noise. I had a cracked flex coupling. Good luck with finding your noise.

Gus: I turned sport mode off and I didn't notice the grinding at all! I drove ~45 miles today.

 

I know little about the transmission so I hope the person that you are going to see is skilled to give a good diagnosis on what the problem is. Please let us know what you come up with.
