Did a search and have not found where anyone has refinished the surround at the gear lever. I understand it's not real wood, but could we not do some sanding and clear coats and buffing out to get back the luster.
I don't think stripper would be a good idea, might melt the plastic.
Anyone try this yet???

It is real wood veneer. These very thin veneers used on tight radius curves are so shiny they look like plastic!

Cracks on the gear surround are a regular issue caused by over tightening the fixings. I sent the one from my 2001 XK8 to a UK specialist but the cost of refinishing was more than sourcing a good used one.

The "wood" in our cars is veneer (real wood but very thin). I have had all of the wood in my car restored by a company called British Autowood | Dashboard and Woodwork Restoration. They did a very good job but for all of the wood, it was a little over $1000. If all you want is the gear shift surround, it would likely not be very expensive.

Find a retired woodworkers hobby club in your area and take your surround piece to them for expert repair and refinishing. These guys always have decades of experience, every woodworking tool known to man, and do a fantastic job. Some of them won't even take your money but you should comp them for supplies and perhaps throw in a box or two of doughnuts for their next club meeting....

Google "woodworkers hobby club" for your city and state and go from there....

Thanks to all, I am fine with doing it myself, now that I know it's real wood. Been finishing antique tables and chairs for years. I don't like it, but my father in law taught me how to French polish, what a pain, but beautiful.
I'll let you know and send a picture or two when it gets done, (winter project, setting by the fire with 2000 grit sandpaper).

Look here for my simple fix. Its not a complete refinish, but it is close enough for me.
