Default Hand Brake - RESOLVED

Howdy, I am a newbie. Just bought a 2002 XKR with 31000 miles. Great car ,been driving it a lot for a few weeks. No problems except finally tried the hand brake which I do not usually use. The rear brakes locked up and the brake handle is floppy. I do not have time to work on the car so I will have it towed to the mechanic. I resisted buying a Jag for years after reading all the problems so I guess I only have myself to blame.

Have you read the owners manual? I could be wrong, but, I think you pull the hand lever up and then push the button on the end and then lower it to take the brake off. At least give it a try before you have it hauled to the dealer.
Good luck.

Yes, I think you have a handbrake that works correctly.
It flops down so you can get out of the car easily.
You do have to pull up quite hard before pressing the button.

+1 to Friarshuck and Steve.

Are you one of the many who buy a Jaguar and then find the Driver's Handbook missing? If you need to download any of the manuals, follow this link:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-2003-a-67827/

Here's the Parking Brake section:

The drop down feature catches out a lot of new owners. Also, because many owners don't apply the Parking Brake very often and rely on the transmission Park pawl to hold the vehicle, they often need adjustment. ( the brake not the owner )

Default handbrake

You were right, it is working correctly. Thank you for setting me straight. Maybe I won't rue the day I bought a Jag.

Thanks for confirming the handbrake is OK. I've edited the thread title to add 'FIXED'.

It's an absolute certainty other new owners will come along in the future with the same issue and this thread will help.

LOL--My first experience with the XK was a test drive at a Jag. dealership. The sales rep. drove the car first and couldn't figure out if the parking brake was engaged or not. I read the owners manual as he drove and discovered how to disengage the brake. I must admit it isn't intuitive to the uninitiated. I'm glad I didn't buy that car. It never ceases to amaze me how little some sales folks know about the product they're representing. By the way this guy claimed he'd been selling Jags. for over 10 yrs.

...whats worse, is that hopefully you haven't driven the car with the brake engaged. Then you'll really have to get dirty to tighten that cable underneath, or worse yet, change those goofy pads in the rear hubs. I did that awhile back...hated that project!

i only drove 100 yrds or so, had to go back and release via the adjuster under the car. tried releasing the handbrake in the correct way last night, and low and behold it works as it should
