Default Headlamp Help

Ok, so a bunch of plastic crap flew up and hit the front of my XK. There is a small mirror thing under the headlamp. It seems to be just flopping around and it appears to be held in with some sort of bracket that is now missing.
What is this thing?
Suggestions on fixing?
Thoughts??

That's the headlamp power wash cover. It clips in place in the underside of the the headlamp. You will have to remove the bolts holding the headlamp, slide it forward a until it is about 80% in, and try to get the power wash assembly to clip onto it. It's a triangle slide in clip. It is a fiddly process.

This thread has images on how to get it fixed. And btw, yes, I forgot to reply to that thread after I solved it following the instructions given to me there. I will add, that the mirror piece is held onto the power wash on a sort of plastic ball joint. You can carefully pull it off so that you have more visibility when trying to slide the assembly into the headlight.

As for the three bolts holding the headlamp assembly: One is near the bonnet hinge, the other atop the headlamp in the frame rail, and the third and toughest to reach, under the headlamp inside the bumper cover. It will be easier if you remove your wheel well liner to access it.

You probably don't have power washers. That looks like the Blanking insert for cars that don't have washers. You will probably need a new insert. It sounds like the impact damaged the way it seats. The cover has 2 pins that insert into holes in the housing. I would guess either a pin or bracket has broken off. Myself I would use a small dab of trim adhesive on the inside edge of the piece and affix it back in place.

I disagree. He has the later style headlights which means he most likely has HIDs. They were required by law to have power wash function in the USA back then.

With the headlights on, they work on every 6th press of the windshield washer button.

Greg,

The H/L Washers Automatically come on and wash your H/L every 5th or 6th time you pull your W/S Washer stalk back....Read your Book! I had a similar thing happen to my XKR and had to buy a new mirror cover and remove the Light, as (Porta Rica) has indicted to hook it up to the little Ball Joint connector on the back of the mirror thing...

Default A Picture speaks a thousand words

Greg,

Here's a picture that may clarify what people are saying above. The head lamp unit comes in two halves and this is the view with the front half out of the car. The power washer unit is circled and it's triangular mount slots into a recess at the base of the headlamp. The mirror cover pops on the front ball joint of the power washer unit. It's a plastic ball so this may just need padding out to firm up the mirror cover. Or it may just be that the power washer unit has come out of the recess and is wobbling about. Maybe it'll slot back in but will be fiddly with no working space. Lots of info on this forum on how to remove the head lamp unit from the wheel well - i remember a really tough torque screw at the bottom which requires blind working! Had to do this job a few times when I "accidentally" lost my mirror cover (one of my numerous "Doh! Don't do this moments!"

Mine is a 1997 for the Canadian market and also has the headlight washer.

I know why its loose. Because its a real bar steward to get back in. It fits into a slot. Takes longer than any other process removing/refitting of headlight.

Will see if I can get a link to my efforts on another forum.................... BRB.

I was trying to find - is there a simple way to disable the washers. I found a thread about pulling the fuse, but no one confirmed it was the right one, etc. I really don't need them, never knew I had them for the last x years...

You can pull Relay #4 in the engine compartment fusebox:

The 2003 electrical diagram also shows F7 (30A) in series with the pump.

Thanks! I am going to first attempt to fix and if that does not work, then I'll use clear silicone caulk to keep things from moving around.... In the meantime I did pull the relay..
I have not tested it yet but I will later this weekend.

It only works ever 7th? windscreen wash anyway. Its a question of feeling its way into position. As I said earlier its a pig to get into position, but its worth it.
