Default Help with power steering pressure hose rerouting

I have suddenly acquired a pretty massive leak from what appears to be the power steering pressure hose, I've seen that the part has been superseded and I am just wondering if anyone has any how tos or write ups about this part any info would be appreciated also I cannot get the search feature of this site to help me. I've typed in power steering xk8 and it eliminates the word xk8 from my search any tips on how to use search?

When you take the old one off you should be able to just follow that routing with the new one.

Don't know what year XK you have. Early cars had a hose that would leak and was superseded by a different hose that routed differently. The newer hose goes straight down out of the pump whereas the older one made a turn out of the pump. I think the rest of it goes along the motor mount to the rack.

Should it go out on the opposite side of the mount from where it is now? This thing came with no instructions lol

The Jag workshop manual is useless as it shows the old right angle setup. Just snake it through and see which way has the right amount of slack. I remember putting one in but it was a long time ago. I was unsure, just like you, about the routing, but managed to get it in and working. Just watch that it doesn't rub anything it shouldn't.

Got it all done, took a few hours and a lot of cuss words (mostly because the engine was still hot after cooling for 2 hours) the hose routes very strangely, the rack part loops around the opposite way that it was previously over the steering knuckle of the rack.

I bought a set of crows feet from harbor freight that made this job 10x simpler there's no way a regular wrench would fit easily into that pump connection..

I installed the hose onto the rack first then the pump, once routed correctly (same place as the old hose under the motor mount) there was tons of slack in the line and I easily put the fitting into the pump by hand and from up top used my hand in a backwards and blind position to feel around for the nut and turned it a few threads then finished up using the crows foot and a 12" extension from the bottom

My opinion if your patient it's a pretty easy job but DONT DO IT WHEN THE MOTOR IS WARM OR HOT. I was impatient and didnt want to wait until next week so I tackled it tonight. I really hope this helps somebody. I'm a pretty skilled DIY mechanic and this one had me scratching my head for a minute or two.

Result.

With this and your position at the head of Google searches, you are officially resident expert on power steering hoses and can expect questions for evermore.

I'm having the very same issue with my 01 xk8 trying to figure out the routing for the new hose.

Does it go to the left or right side of the motor mount?

I've run out of cuss words!!

Anyone help me p l e a s e??

I am going to do the same on my 2001 XK8.
The JldirectdfW july 2012 told us that he routed it the same way as the old one.
I am going to try that first.
Will let you know my outcome later.

When I worked at the dealer there was a superseded part number for the hose (in the early 2000s) and the shape was different. I took it back to the parts dept and the parts guy called Jaguar. They told him that that was the latest version and IT WOULD FIT with some manipulation.

I managed to get it routed from pump-to-rack so I called it 'good'.

Hello again;
I finally got my ABS module fixed (Module Repair Pro, Van Nuys, CA $100 + 2x shipping),but now I have a serious PS leak.

It leaked intermittently for years I guess as I would get a few drops spreading out on cardboard under the front of the car. No real issues, the reservoir was always full. Then, after driving to get the mileage for smog tests yesterday, the PS fluid seemed to disappear within a few miles. I had tried that expensive PS stop-leak, but it didn't help at all. I can see the grime and wetness on the connections or hoses from above, but really have no idea where it is coming from except it drips far up front near the reservoir and pump. In fact, the drips now are much further front towards inside the left front wheel (under the reservoir). I can't get underneath.

Can it be just a loose connection at the pump/reservoir....or am I doomed to an expensive shop R&R???

After going through all the JTIS operations for R&R of the PAS pump, we got stopped dead by the HP line nut that was frozen and wouldn't budge. This is where we are now:

FINALLY!

My son placed a 1/2" X 36" round breaker bar against the a/c pulley and gave the 5/8" stubby a little push. The nut FINALLY broke loose. That's way over the top for normal maintenance.

We have been searching for an "O" ring seal. So far, not finding one on the line connection or up in the pump with a small pick. All the replacements I see for sale have an "O" ring at the end. So....hmmmmmmmmm.....I guess removal of the pump has once again become mandatory.

I would rather keep this original HP line with the 90 degree bend. The newer lines/fittings look even harder to line up and start threading in.

Anyway, "good" for now.

Ken
