Default How to remove alternator pulley?

Google and searching our website have both proven fruitless. I have an 01XKR with a kaput alternator, my parts guy has one without pulley in his dusty old parts. It's a Nippondenso, 120amp, everything looks the same, just needs the pulley from mine. Mine has a nut with my best guess, a bolt with ten millimeter hex bolt in the center. Thanks in advance for any advice.

From what you describe I'd grab my impact wrench and undo the nut. The hammering of an impact wrench happens so fast it beats the inertia required to turn the pulley IME.

From what has been posted here before, it is a good call to stay with a Denso alternator. The better plan is to find a local rebuilder that can fix/upgrade/rebuild your existing unit for a perfect fit and typically lower cost.

^^ Agreed. I had my wife's 2006 XK8's factory Denso alternator refurbished with the proper Denso kit when it failed in July 2018. Bringing it back to like-new condition was well worth the $120 it cost me. No worries about fitment or operation with the like-new factory alternator going back into the vehicle. Glad I made the decision to refurbish rather than replace....

All good advise above but get the feeling you want to use what is available.
Advise, you can use a pulley to get it off, but unless it's a slip on fit on the replacement, do not set the alternator on a bench and hammer the pulley on. You will distort the bearing.
Have not looked at one, but if it's the same as a power steering pulley, you can rent a kit from your local parts store. Do not use a press.

I had the local starter and alternator guy look at it, he said it's been rebuilt once and due to the grade of prior work, not rebuildable, there are guns missing from the rotor. The one at the parts store is a Denso that appears right and according to the old application book is correct. I might just break down and have the alternator guy swap the pulley onto the new one.

We'll see if this picture posts. Not sure of how many Ugga Duggas on the center bolt or the hex nut.Attachment 220055How to remove alternator pulley?-photo831.jpg

Rockauto has one (Denso) for about $130, with pulley to avoid the hassle of swapping pulleys.

You gotta be kidding me! That's less than the one at the local parts store.

Here’s a Youtube video.

I’ve my old defunct alternator in a box somewhere, so I may just give it a go, when I’ve some free time, with my electric impact wrench.

My parts guy called today, after blowing a substantial amount of dust off, he called to say it has a serpentine pulley and no bolt in the center. I got home, hit the 22mm nut with my 1/2" DeWalt 20V impact, the bolt in the center was definitely a bolt that was Loctite or seized in place, I ended up chucking the alternator up in my drill press and drilled the head off the bolt, 22mm nut spun right off with the impact.

I'm a big fan of Rockauto also, but I snooped around partsgeeek and saw an amazing number of parts available for my cars ('03 XK8 & Acutra TL) and not just mechanical parts.
