Default Inherited XKR

It's been nearly two years since I have been an active member in this forum ever since I sold my black XK8.

Sadly, under the worst of circumstances I will become more active.

Dad died last Thursday and I have received as an inheritance a silver on black '04 XKR Coupe.

It starts up and runs well, however I have noticed a few things:

Coolant smell but no visible leak. However there is a leak because the expansion tank was half-empty.

And that darn check rear lights/cruise not available when the rear lights work just fine.

So, I'm thinking I'll have to change that switch in the footwell and go ahead and replace all the cooling system hoses and do a flush.

Also, the passenger side exhaust needs a new clamp, the wipers need to be replaced, and the driver's door needs a few new clips to be replaced.

How many cooling system hoses does the XKR have? I haven't inspected them, but I would change the radiator hoses, heater hoses, the octopus hose, and perhaps the water pump as well. I also know this car also has some hoses for cooling the supercharger.

Can anyone provide me with all the parts numbers for the hoses, clips, and clamps?

Can I use an aftermarket universal clamp for the exhaust? This car has an aftermarket exhaust that sounds beautiful.

Is there anything that I should check that is specific to the XKR?

Welcome back to the forum,

I'm sorry to hear it's in such sad circumstances.

If you don't have access to JEPC, a good alternative for part numbers is forum Sponsor S N G Barratt website:

SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist

If the transmission hasn't had a fluid and filter change recently then that should also be on your priority list.

Thank you.

I had not thought about the transmission fluid and filter. I'll get to that as well. I know I have the SNG parts catalog somewhere. I need to check if I can find it.

My sincere condolences on the loss of your father. I know you are young. I lost my father when I was 20. Remember the good times you had with him as you work your way through the grieving process....

Hi Glan--sorry about your dad.

I suspect the coolant leak might be at the fitting of the octopus hose that is right above one of the cats. I kept losing coolant and there was no apparent leak, but when I felt down at that fitting (referred to as the Norma connection) I could feel moisture. What happens is that the coolant leaks onto the shroud above the cat and evaporates so you never see anything but you smell it. I had the local shop replace the hose and it was a few hundred bucks (hose is expensive and access is difficult).

Do a brake fluid flush as well.

I have a leak at the hose clip securing the coolant bleed hose to the reservoir. It drips onto a hot surface and evaporates as well, leaving the trace of anti-freeze in the air. I do not like the short section of rubber hose, to rigid plastic, to short section of hose, to reservoir design in particular, it seems bound to get brittle and break at some inopportune time.

I plan to replace the entire run with high pressure, high temperature rubber fuel line from O'Rielly's, as I can buy it off the spool at ~.38 cents a foot. I am also replacing the hose clips with regular hose clamps.

Condolences on your loss.

I'll check that out.

For now the car is hidden in my grandfather's house while I sort out all the legal BS.

On the brighter side, welcome back to the Forums, +1 on the SNG catalog as it has helped me greatly with correct part #s as needed for my XKR repairs. Hope your new XKR experiences bring fond memories of yor Dad.

Best to you and your family Gian.

Welcome back!

We weathered the storm just fine. Concrete houses are a major factor in that.

However, as of this writing, the power is not back where I live. At least we've had water for two months now.

"And that darn check rear lights/cruise not available when the rear lights work just fine."

That is a small square block up under the dash. Above the Brake pedal. If you look inside the engine bay against the bulkhead you will see two tiny nuts holding something the other side. Thats the switch. You have to be a contortionist to get to it. I lay with my back on the floor. Head on the pedal feeling the switch whilst being guided from the engine bay. Some can do it in 5 mins, I took an hour.

You wont have cruise control till its fixed.

If you google this problem its quite common on the Jags.

It's easier if you remove the seat first, only four bolts and a couple of electrical connectors.

I was looking at sgtofmarine's thread on replacing the switch, feeling confident I could make this a little project for the Holidays. However, that price for the switch is stratosferic. The cheapest I found was $155 on SNG Barratt.

Is it possible to repair the old switch?

Gian - yes - there are 2 micro switches in the brake switch assembly that can be replaced. I do not know the part number for those but there are a few who have done this repair - Jon89 has for sure and may be able to point you in the right direction

check-rear-lights-cruise-not-available-warning-63241/page2/#post1575929

Search for this: Omron D2HW-A211D

Have you checked Advance auto parts? When available (spotty at best), it is inventoried as a cruise control switch. With coupon codes, etc, can be as low as $65. If you have basic soldering skills, nothing beats those cheap new switches. That and the feel of fixing it yourself!

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Jaguar Reno is slightly cheaper, I ordered mine this last spring for $140 plus shipping (147.08 total) and they had it on my door pretty quick.

I’m all for repairing the old switch, but keep in mind it may not be the old microswitches not working, they may be out of synch with each other.

I bought an R off ebay in the spring, with a slight coolant loss . I was chuffed to bits when I found it to be a tiny hose under the throttle body , an elbow shaped thing about 3inch long.

Bear in mind that you don't need the bracket that the switch assembly is mounted to. It's actually easier to swap the "plastic box" on the bracket than remove and replace the bracket.
