Good morning, like the title says I have an intermittent Amber ABS light with ASC and TRAC warning message on the dash. By chance are all these systems running the same hydraulic fluid? Any other thoughts and comments appreciated. Cheers.

 

This subject has been beat around many times. I and many other members resolved this by taking the ABS module apart, soldering the pins that the connector plugs into, problem usually solved. I believe there is even a video on the process. Not a hard fix.

 

I have never been able to do a perm. fix myself so I sent it out to one of the ebay "rebuilders" on my xk a few weeks back. The one in the NE us is who I used. It was gone less than a week and the light has not returned!

 

A good working batterie is the first and easiest to check.
In my case it happens when the batterie is new or comming of the charger,
or when the batterie is not good anymore. You can notice this when the windows programming need to be redone every time you use the car.
After a month or so normal car use the message disappears.

 

I have the same problem as you, although mine seems to be caused by water ingress* so if the intermittent problem only happens when it's raining then that could be something to look at.

Cleaning the speed sensors cured this problem and also worked for a friend of mine

 

Mine sits more than I drive it, and routinely shows those warnings upon start if/when the battery gets pretty low. Apparently this booger sips a fair amount of juice when it's parked (as I'm guessing most cars these days do because of all the electronics). Recharge your battery or replace it, and see if that changes the behavior (at least for a while).

 

In reality, a proper code reader could tell you what the module is complaining about, and point you to whatever corner of the car the fault is. Barring that, here is a strategy, ordered from easy/cheap towards more involved. Your mileage may vary:

1. Remove each wheel in turn, check and clean the ABS sensor (just a bolt) AND the connector/boot.
2. Check the ABS ring, make sure it is solid with the hub.
3. While there, bleed the hydraulic fluid on each caliper. Gently tap the caliper with a hammer to dislodge air bubbles (a clear tube helps to see this).
4. Check other basics, like tire air pressure. A severely deflated tire could give you codes, I suppose. Tire are the same size left-to-right, right?
5. Once this is done, put it all back together and do a test drive. If fixed, the system needs a short drive to reset.
6. If none of this works, then it might be time to check the ABS module internals. My understanding is that the solder comes loose at the power posts, and that can "easily" be fixed (never done this myself), or sent out for repair.
