Well I just got my anniversary present. Electric exhaust cutouts on 2000 XKR very cool. The kitty needed some claws. Here are some pictures of the install. I will tell the cons and the pro. The pros are that you can tune the sound and have the choice of a quiet day or tune it up and start growing claws. Or just wake up the kids from a nap. The Cons are the cost about $450.00 for everything and that I feel that you do lose a little torque if you have the valves wide open. Also there is vibration which I do not like , again that if you have it wide open. But if you play with it you can get it just right and sound very angty. And soon as I can figure out how to upload video to youtube I'll record it and you can hear the difference for your self.

Now I have been told that if you have less then 400 horse power and a 2 in pipe then you may not see the extra horsepower. I say, who care, I think they are cool and my son loves them. And isn't that what it's all about.

I'm wondering if they would be legal here in Europe - probably not, knowing how things are going

 

I'm sure you've thought of this but is there any danger of getting exhaust fumes into the car?

 

You really should have a balance pipe in there to join the systems back together, you will loose power....

I love my cut outs too! It really is the best of both worlds, can sound like a race car or get all quiet and sophisticated.

I'm not sure that it is what I would do to my car, but had thought about it with a different vehicle. I thank you for posting your pics, etc., so that others can learn from your effort. That is part of what makes this forum AWESOME!

 

For Frog: it's for racing racing purposes only ( wink wink nod nod).

For Steve: I have not experienced any exhaust fumes inside yet.

For Xracer: we had to install them at the location that see on the picture because of the size of the cutouts. I wanted them side by side but would not fit. Do you see a spot to put the pipe that you are talking about.

For Vector: we are loving it went to the parking garage and open up the pipes, and the you can see the birds flying away.

 

Very nice, I am thinking of doing an X pipe------> VT mufflers (they have the loud valve builtin) ----> tail pipes.....

I am wondering if an X pipe and cut-outs to tail pipes would keep the power and allow for that race style noise.

 

I would put a H pipe in just behind the cut outs, that will work fine, might be a curious experiment as you will be able to feel the power change when you switch the cut out open.

When I looked into doing this I was going to fit them in place of the boxes in front of the cage, so keep the main box and back back boxes, maybe I will one day.....

 

There is also the possbility of installing a H pipe, and then installing the cutouts on the H pipe. That would let them be installed without having to offset them because of space.

Hmmm, .... what would happen if you put "one" cutout on the H-Pipe itself? It seems as if OP was more interested in sound than performance. I wonder what that would sound like?

 

Yes, I still have mine installed. No rattles, no problems with operation other than a slight leak that was fixed under warranty. You would have to be heavily armed to get them away from me now.

I did open mine up at a Road Atlanta track weekend, wow! We had to close them on Sunday morning due to local noise restrictions, but they otherwise got a good thrashing.

I used low ovals from DMH (see pic,) so they would be symmetrical and exit the sides, no fumes, ever.

We also checked temps on the lower surfaces with a laser gun after running them wide open for 5 minutes with the car stationary, only found a few spots that hit 88F or so.

This is about sound and fun, not power! You will lose some low end torque, but you won't even think about it because you will be smiling so much, I guarantee!

I did send mine back near the end of the 4 year warranty to be refurbished. They were not closing completely, they were sticking open just a tad. Had new motors and newly developed motor covers installed at no charge.

The parts that are black plastic in the pic below are now covered with metal. They came back looking like new! That is one reason I went with DMH, a 4 year warranty that they honor! Dave is the best!

This is the best mod I have ever done to any car, period!
