Quick question: On my 2004 XK8 (120K miles) where are the catalytic converters?
I see the exhaust pipes coming down both sides of the transmission, then converge into a single thing that looks like a muffler, then heading back it splits back into two pipes and heads to two other smaller muffler looking things where the tail pipes are attached. Are they up by the transmission, back after the muffler, or somewhere else?
The reason I am asking is because I want to see if I can unscrew something and look into the catalytic converter to see if it shows signed of wear/damage and needs to be replaced. I'm getting multiple misfires on 4 cylinders and have read here that this may be due to a damaged cat blocking the flow of exhaust.
I, too, will be interested in this. I'm getting codes 0300, 030X (whichever cylinders misfire along with #6) 1316 and now, 0430. I'm flummoxed! I've replaced the spark plugs with NGKs, and the ignition coild with Jaguar. I've got a breather tube that I trust, and a brand new intake through throttle body. These misfires are driving me batty! I found a part on Amazon that apparently can make it so the downstream O2 sensor reading appears normal. It may or may not be allowed by Emissions Testing in your area:
Starting from the horizontal engine exhaust manifolds, the converters are the first section going pretty much straight down. They are made of steel, so they typically show some rust. There is an oxygen sensor near the top and another one, say, halfway down. Easily seen from the top.
it’s the vertical “can” with the shiney fresh welds in the pic. Held on by a bracket

Top view from the engine bay. You’ll need to move the air tunnel and the coolant expansion tank out of the way to access nuts and bolts on top of the CAT.
Good luck. Hope it’s not the CATs as these are expensive parts.
Attached is a Print-out of the XK8 - XKR Exhaust System....#3 shows where both Cats fit into the system. "Looks like a small Trash Can standing on end... The Cat-Converter is #3 in the Exhuast System

Reason: Correct error
Thanks for everyone's help. I made a new post to document all the issues I had resulting from my bad catalytic converters. If you want to read all about this long, sad, cautionary tale here is the link.
