Smile Looking for 2003 XK Coupe Pricing advice

Hello All,

I'm looking for honest pricing advice for a 2003 XK8 coupe. I see a great disparity between the KBB price, and the prices that are reflected via the online sales market.

Any straightforward advice or input would be greatly appreciated. (The car has every option added, Mina stainless exhaust, 99k miles.)

v/r,

H.K.

I'll not attempt to comment of used XK8 Coupe values in SoCal but can make the following observations on the disparity.

1. Coupe is rarer than Convertible in the US generally and probably even rarer in CA
2. most desirable is a one owner, low mileage example with full service history
3. an 11 year old vehicle should have had additional (costly) work to maintain transmission and suspension with receipts to validate

Move away from any of these 'ideals' and value drops. Factor in condition of bodywork and interior (missing, broken or damaged items) and value takes a further hit.

Finally, some owners do have an inflated idea of the value of their vehicles!

+1 on that advice. Based on my recent experience in purchasing a 2000 XK8, and some of the mistakes I made, I would add the following:

I found a lot of scams and BS on CraigsList, so believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.

Ebay tries to add a layer of protection for the buyer, but it might be a very arduous process to get any or all of your money back. The primary danger with Ebay is getting "auction fever" and over bidding.

Consider looking at cars a greater distance away, where prices may not be as inflated as those in SoCal. I live in PA, but went to Southern MD for the car I bought.

If you find a car you're serious about, and you know a mechanic with Jaguar experience, you might consider paying a few hundred dollars for his time to check it out. Given the significant potential costs involved in future repairs, it would be money well spent.

Try not to fall in love too easily (it's the right color, interior, wheels, etc.). These cars are about as seductive as they come, hence my advice on bringing a mechanic.

Finally, try to enjoy the excitement and anticipation involved in the process. Not too many things we get to do that are that much fun!

Prices vary widely, I bought a 03 XK8 vert with 86K from the La area three months ago for 11K. Car appearance is 95% like new and I've put about $1200 in repairs doing the work myself. Mostly front suspension work. Probably could have done less supension work but as I had it apart I decided to replace everything under the front. So for around $12,200 I now have a completely sorted out car.

Personally with these cars I'd rather buy low and make repairs as then you know what's been done.

I'm actually the potential seller, looking for selling advice for an 03, and at the same time purchasing advice for a 2010-11. Thank you for the information!

Selling is definitely different from buying. What a car is worth depends on the buyer. These cars can vary thousands of dollars as they are not quite collectibles yet, but do retain the Jaguar mystique that often lures buyers to overpay.

The short answer is to check prices of similar vehicles in your area (LA should have tons) and also look at eBay. You have the advantage with local buyers obviously, as they can drive the car and not have to hassle with shipping.

Not sure what extra options yours has as most came fully equipped. Wheels are the only major thing that jumps to my mind and maybe the navigation system. If you wanted options on the XK8, you bought the XKR. Mina exhausts are a plus, just don't expect to get all your money back.

Hope this helps some and wish I had some loose change to buy your coupe to keep my convertible company.

Thank you Mike that's all good info. I'm having a little trouble in that there are so few coupes out there, but I think I'm in the right area now.

An important detail you forgot to mention!

Collect together as much history and servicing records/receipts as you can. We always advise potential buyers to look for comprehensive service history as it takes a lot of the uncertainty out of Jaguar buying. An owner who methodically records this kind of information is likely to be one who also takes good care of the vehicle.

US members who have been searching for a Coupe have usually had trouble finding one as numbers are low compared with Convertibles. Think about advertising beyond SoCal as potential buyers will be prepared to travel.

If you post photos, members will be able to give a better indication of what they would consider a reasonable asking price.

I've seen 03 coupes with your miles around $9k when I was looking for a XKR coupe. But it can be more or less dependent upon condition with records.

Two and a half years ago I bought my gorgeous '03 XKR (with SS exhaust, sport suspension and brakes, and improved interior) for $12.5K. It also had about 100K miles on it. A the time it was a pretty good deal by about 4 or 5K.

Of course, you live in California. God only knows what you nut-cakes call logical.

Then again, even God might look down upon you guys and scratch his head in bewilderment.

Good luck with the sale. Drive our values UP!!!

I did worry about ride quality with the stiffer suspension when considering the car. I wanted a great GT; not a sports car. However, when I was told that she had 18" wheels (instead of the 20s) I decided to give it a shot. She rides quite nicely and handles well too.
