Ok so since I've owner my 97 xk8, every time I go to get gas I get a rush of air blowing out as soon as I start to take off the cap. If I go slow, it bleeds down, but if I go fast it really goes PHHHEEEEEWWWWWWWWW! Has anyone had this? I would think there may be a problem with my vent, but not really sure where to start
As with all things on our XK8s, it could be complicated. Are you actually having a problem? Vacuum build up in the tank is a problem. Does the Fuel slowly fill at the gas pump? Do you have any problems starting the car when cold? Is there a strong smell of gas in the front left wheel well? Do you find P04xx DTC codes from the OBD reader. Probably the EVAP system.
Not really having any issues. When it got down in the 20f's outside it took a little more turning over for it to start, but part of me wonders if it's more a nikasil wear and contraction of the cylinders causing a slight compression issue until the friction warms it up a tidge. No codes, no issues filling.
I thought that was why they replaced many of the nikasil lined blocks, due to low compression from the lining wearing away. More from sulfer or what not, but still
Yes, the problem was caused by high sulfur fuel, a thing of the past. There have been reports from members doing a teardown that the factory cross hatching was still evident after 100K mi. But severe overheating will destroy the nikasil, so installation of RealGauge from the jagwrangler or some method of displaying the actual temp. is a good idea. The factory gauge is useless.
Yeah I knew the factory was more of an idiot light than anything. I took for granted that since they had the recall when many of the cars were newer, that there was an issue with it wearing out
So to hopefully put an update and end to this thread, i had done research and saw about the Rochester valve in the left fender, and had sprayed carb cleaner in it before to no avail. Well just recently I decided to look into it again and I saw about opening up the valve! I thought it was a factory sealed type thing, but lo and behold its not! I opened it up and the inside was full of silt basically. I cleaned it out and pulled the little valve out and there are 4 little holes under it. Yep, you guessed it, they were clogged too! Cleaned them out and put everything back together, and so far no more pressure building up in the tank! Wooohoooo!

these are stock pics, they have it listed as "fuel tank pressure control valve" on the diagram earlier in the thread. To open it up you just use a small screwdriver or 2 and basically the top with the single nipple will come out. Inside there is a spring, a large diaphragm and under those is what seems to be the main problem. A small diaphragm that presses into a hole, and under it is 4 small holes. They get clogged and voila no pressure relief! Clean those out, pop it back together and done! Its really very easy once you do it.

I hate to ask but was it oil, dirt, both - just the regular grime that comes with a cars 'breathing' over a couple decades?
It was basically silt type dirt, possibly micro rust,dust, dirt. Hard to say. Possibly even just a build up of evaporated gas particals that built up over the years. Either way, the hardest parts of it are the removal of the wheel liner, and getting the bracket out. Lol. Overall a pretty easy thing comparatively
