Default Low Oil Pressure 1997 XK8

Was about to pull out from a parking lot, engine cuts out, "low oil pressure" light came on. Had it towed to my mechanic, he will be looking at it today. Fingers crossed the engine is OK. Assuming this is an oil pump, any sources for the replacement other than eBay?

Thank you.

If the oil pressure light came on after the engine stopped, that's normal.

Yep, that is exactly how it happen. Engine stopped and then the light came on. I am waiting to hear from the mechanic, expecting it to be an oil pump. Found some options on eBay, will reach out to you guys to make sure I am ordering the right part once I hear back. Incidentally, how hard is it to replace the pump, is it more or less easily accessible?

Thx

You're getting way ahead of yourself on several levels. The low oil pressure light came on as a result of the engine stopping, it was not the cause of the engine stopping.

All cars do this.

I do have what should be a pretty low mileage 97 motor that I got from a parts XK after I got a little too close to a deer. The car had 130k on the odo but it is a jaguar remanned so I would assume it would have a good deal less mileage. If the mechanic finds the worst you might be able to pry it out of my hands. Never heard it run but the car was dead from a bad tranny when I got it so would suspect it is just fine but I would do tensioners before installing it. LOL

It would appear there is nothing wrong with the oil pump. As I wrote earlier, it's normal for the light to come on when the engine stops. Just stop an think: if the engine isn't running the oil pump isn't turning.

I hope your mechanic can determine why the engine quit, that's more to the point.

Just talked to my mechanic. He is scratching his head. Said the car is full of oil, oil is clean, he doesn't think it is an oil pump, but he can't get the car running. He is also having hard time hooking up his computer. I told him that I turned AC on 15 sec before it happened, he said that the AC is currently off. Any ideas?

Only 3 essentials required to start the engine:

1. rotation
2. fuel
3. spark

Now your mechanic has apparently eliminated (1), it could be time to check for (2) ....

I dont think it is quite that simple, could be a computer issue, etc.

Stop trying to make it more complicated, although it is a Jag. If your mechanic can't check for fuel pressure at the rail and spark you need a new mechanic.

Also since it's a nikasil lined engine, any attempts to start it cold without success could result in bore wash if the fuel pump is working. Other engines can also have the same issue, but the early Jags are particularly susceptible.

Please keep us informed.

The 97 ECU is more likely to have a ECU failure due to leaking copacitors, but the typical symptom is a misfire of four or more cylinders and some strange fault codes.

More information would be helpful .................

Does car lock and unlock OK ?

Do all lights on dashboard come on when key is turned to position 1.

Does engine turn over (crank) when key moved to position 2.

With ignition on, and foot on brake, can you move the gearshift lever.

What sort of "computer" is your mechanic using ?

How old is the battery and what is the voltage ?

Is there any fuel pressure at the Schrader valve (like a tyre valve) at the front of the engine on the right-hand (looking from front) side ?

It's at a "gas station" Get it out of there! You need a specialist to check crank and cam sensors assuming it has normal fuel pressure. Find an Indie British car shop. Check reviews of any shop before committing the car.

I have been using them for a very long time. If can't figure it out he will tell me but so far he has been handling all my cars for the past 15 years including some pretty involved stuff. He checked the gas pressure, saying it is over 40 pounds holding pressure whatever that means.

Okay, you probably have bore wash now on top of any previous problem. Have the mechanic check compression, it will probably be very low.

Do a search of bore wash on the forum if the compression is low and show the results to the mechanic. A small amount of oil in the cylinders is the cure.

Time for plan B, anybody could recommend a good Jaguar mechanic in Northern New Jersey, I am at zip code 07936. Car would have to be towed so distance is a consideration.

Thanks.
